I like it here - 5/18/2007
I moved here from Los Angeles two years ago. Overall, I'm quite happy here. It's nice to have four distinct seasons for a change. The mountains are beautiful. Summer wildflowers and gorgeous fall color are among the scenic highlights. The population is becoming increasingly diverse, much more so than you might expect. Another pleasant surprise has been the quality and variety of the restaurants. Best of all, you're within relatively easy driving distance to all the Utah national parks, as well as Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, and numerous scenic areas within Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, and Colorado. A major bonus!!

There can be a bit of culture shock when moving here from other large cities. The LDS culture takes a bit of getting used to, but about half of Salt Lake's population is non-Mormon (as am I), so it's not as much of an adjustment as it must have been in years past. For the most part, the Mormons I've interacted with have been friendly and hospitable. Read More

Salt Lake City is a very pleasant and modern city. - 4/26/2007
Salt Lake City is a very pleasant and modern city. I have lived here for 14 years.

Downside: Hot summers. Cold winters. Winter smog. Laws are restrictive about gambling, drinking and other vices. Other large cities are hundreds of miles away. Housing prices have gotten higher. Mormons don't socialize as much with non-Mormons. Low tech jobs tend to not pay well. There may be a small amount of job discrimination against non-Mormons. Minor traffic problems here but not near as bad as some cities. Crime is surprisingly high. There seem to be many homeless people, which is part of the crime problem.

Upside: Low humidity. Fall and spring are wonderful. Mountains are beautiful. City is clean and extremely well laid out. Highway system is pretty good. Most commutes are about 15 to 20 minutes. There is much to do in the city if you know where to look. Many great restaurants, especially many ethnic places to eat. People are for the most Read More

WE WANT OUT ASAP !!! - 1/14/2007
This place sucks, I've lived here off and on my whole life. The companies here don't pay what people are worth (I work for a company located in Michigan). Local companies won't hire unless you're a Mormon, yes, that's ILLEGAL, but companies here get away with it! INBREEDING... lots of it. People around here are mental drones and only know what their cult-like religion teaches them. If you have children, watch them closely for their safety. Utah ranks among the worst areas for child endangerment and sexual abuse. There are very few good places to eat out as the locals don't know what good food really is... I've watched some excellent eateries come and go and the owners have always told me the same thing: Utah is too hard of a place do business because of the taxes and corrupt governments. Cost of living is skyrocketing and it's hard to find a house with any kind of yard at all. Nothing is close or convenient and don't even get me started on the traffic and stupid ways people drive Read More

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - 1/10/2007
I've been a resident of Salt Lake City for 11 years and at first I didn't like it. But over the years the city has improved and in my opinion doing really smart things for growth. So here's my list of the good the bad and the ugly.

The Good:
1. Very clean city and beautiful landscape (lots of different scenery!)
2. Good public transportation and getting better
3. The climate is mild compared to a lot of places although the spring and falls can be short but the summers and winters are pleasant with some exceptions.
4. Outdoor mecca for biking, hiking, skiing, camping etc.
5. Very safe.

The Bad:
1. If you have to drive the commutes can be bad in the morning and afternoon, but they are not bad by comparison to many major metropolitan areas.
2. The night life isn't that great and if your single can be difficult to meet other singles. This should hopefully improve in the next few years with a lot of changes being made Read More

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - 12/29/2006
I am a native Utahan and qualified to express an opinion on my great state. Salt Lake City is more liberal than the rest of Utah but more conservative than other cities. The good things about Salt Lake City are low humidity, sunny days, cool nights, low crime rates, short distances to great recreational areas, short commutes, a Trax system, wide streets laid out on a coordinate plan, exceptional education. The Bad--state liquor laws, sales tax on food, winter temperature inversions, too many people moving to Utah. The Ugly--dominant church loyalty, Republican domination of state legislature, narrow-minded citizens, Californians selling their houses for a mint and buying Salt Lake homes for above listing Read More

Salt Lake - 11/13/2006
I Have lived here my entire life. People here are clones of each other, everyone is the same. Do not move here if you are not mormon, people here are very unaccepting of outside religions. The winters can be very harsh if you are not used to snow. The surrounding cities of Salt Lake like Bountiful and Centerville are very close to Salt Lake and very very clean and neat but they also have the relogion thing. If you can overcome the religious thing it is a great place to live, traffic can be horrible Read More
