Well I guess I'm late to the posts but maybe someone new will want info. I have lived here for 18 years. Growing up in CA. Way different. In response to other posts, the crime here is not bad until you get to the cities like newport news, Hampton, Norfolk. Very bad. Visiting is great. Colonial williamsburg , Busch Gardens, and so on. Other than that forget it. It is very hot and humid and damp and cold in winter. Cloudy and gloomy about half the time year round. On the good side schools are great, the area is clean and well maintained. Has a small town feel but still all the shopping and restaurants one could need. This area consists of 3 categories. retired, college and military. If you don't fall into one of those you may not like it here. The people seem to be very conservative or just depressed. Maybe weather related. Friendly but hard to get to know.it's hard to be motivated when surrounded by people who are not. The economy however is bad if you come to work and no

Really think twice about living here. - 5/3/2014
As a Northerner and a person of color, I found this area to be the worst place I've lived (I have lived up and down the East Coast). This town is not diverse and in general, very segregated. Williamsburg is a pretty town to visit for 2 hours, but I would never recommend this place to live in unless you're 65 or have a family and just want to settle. If you're someone that enjoys any sort of real culture, I would also say to absolutely stay away...
Winters are very bleak and in general, Williamsburg is very, very limited. I have found the Hampton Roads area to just be depressing with its military/industrial hold...the people in general seem to be unhappy, traffic is awful, and despite the fact that no one knows Hampton Roads aside from the people living there, the cost of living is almost to that of Richmond...very pricey for living in a no-name, depressed area. Williamsburg, the former Colonial capital of Virginia, inspires many retirees who choose to settle in an area with moderate climate, cultural amenities, stable economy, and a college town that offers adult classes on everything from history to Tai Chi.
A new bicycle trail, the Capitol to Capitol Trail, has been funded and partially built, and will cover 60 miles from the old capitol (Williamsburg) to the current one (Richmond).
Our winters are moderate, with most snow gone in a few days. Spring and Fall bring visitors to the colonial area where visitors are treated to costumed narrators who spin tales of the early colonies, including slavery. The main street in Colonial Williamsburg, Duke of Gloucester Street, is a former Indian trail and the water sheds for the James and York Rivers are on opposite sides of the street. Restaurants abound and various cuisines tantalize the taste buds.

Small Town Feel - 4/5/2007
Pretty much all of the comments that have been posted already are valid. I started out here as a student at the College of William and Mary and stayed after I graduated. In the 4 years I've lived as a "townie", I think I have some perspective on Williamsburg. Every year we see thousands and thousands of tourists and if you travel along Rt 60 down and into the Colonial Area you may feel overwhelmed. But this is not Williamsburg. The actual local residents have formed a nice small community. This is both good and bad. It means that gossip travels fast, but also that you will always run into folks you know at the grocery store. William and Mary has the feeling of an insulated campus, eventhough the students are fairly active in the community. One of the shining lights of Williamsburg is its public library: The Williamsburg Regional Library. It is one of the best in the country and spends more per capita in Williamsburg and James City County than most as well.
