Review of Tucson, Arizona

Climate is great BUT
Star Rating - 5/23/2007
Wen I moved here in 2000, I thought Tucson was wonderful. The climate is first rate even the summers, which are more of a blast furnace than summer.
But aside from the climate, Tucson is stuck in a small townmentality. With 1.2 million reisdents, the powers that be still think the town is 250,000. The freeways are being ripped up for the next 3 years, street traffic is a bad as Los Angeles, drivers are the worst I've ever seen and I have seen drivers all over the world plus you have all the old fols who still think they can drive (by old I mean 80+) and present a real hazard. The add the Mexicans who don't read or speak English and its a mess.
Crime is rampant, car insurance is very expensive( Tucson is #1 in the country for auto theft)hosing is less afforadable than 6 years ago- lots of building here as well. Plus, Tucson is 60 miles form the border, so we have all those problems as well. Water is becoming scare each year.
While you can't run from problems as its everywhere, there are better places to live than here. CLimate isn't the only thing to look for. The schools are on par with Mississippi's and private schools are the answer if you can afford them. I wouldn't put my kids in a Tucson school for any amount of money. The non English speakers drag down scores and divert teachers from really teaching.
Food is getting expensive, taxes are increasing, public transportation is very slowly getting better, and you have to select your hospital carefully.

It sounds like a miserable place, maybe it should be given back to Mexico.

I moved to Tucson in the late 90's. It was a town of several interesting communities. It was easy to commute to work and jobs weren't too hard to find. As more people moved in the traffic became cramped. Jobs have been mostly service oriented with everyone and their uncle wanting to start their own business some businesses are successful but often times the business is a "me too" "fly-by-night outfit with the standards of income quite a bit lower than other parts of the country. Often times people move from green areas struck by the beauty of the desert and the next thing you know they're planting petunias instead of xerascaping (Tucson depends on the Colorado River for its water source and water has become an increasing issue) There has been quite a bit of controversy over recycled (CAP) water which has yet to be resolved. I left 2 years ago and returned last year to find the city is finally restructuring its highways but its difficult -Tucson is an old cattle town and it many of the old families wants it to stay that way. I remember when Houghton was cattle range and wild all the way to the Santa Ritas now its all developed with big box stores and people who don't really care about the town's history and have no interest in preserving it. The town is turning into an indifferent sprawl while the basics like education and water are not being addressed. The bus system is a joke (buses often either not on time or they don't show). The traffic is terrible its as bad if not worse than any major city and in 110 degree heat it can be a pressure cooker for some people.
