Review of Reno, Nevada

Expensive and will continue to get more expensive
Star Rating - 9/28/2020
BestPlaces is years behind current data by 5+ years. This city is becoming more and more expensive. For 2020, the median rent for a 2 bedroom apartment is $1,600. The median rent for 2 bedroom house is $2,200. Do your homework before moving here. Look at other cites that stay up to date on cost of housing, apartments, etc.

I have lived here for 5 years and this place has doubled in cost of living in the short time of being here. Why is this? The reason is that people from the bay area of CA are selling their homes and buying in Reno, NV because there is no state income tax, which is great for people who are retired or who have lots of money from the bay area and are bringing it with them to Reno. Reno cannot keep up with the high demand for houses and apartments causing the price to rise record breaking. Making this the fastest growing city in the nation. It is too costly to start a family here and there is a lack of companies that are willing to pay relatively to the cost of living.

One of the issues is not just CA transplants to Reno - one is that the city council is in the back pockets of the developers. And investors are buying up property like mad just to rent it out at high prices. No controls on developers or on greedy investors.

This review is spot on, and housing prices have only increased since 2020. Rent prices are outrageous and gas was $5.47 today, almost $2 a gallon more than the national average for gas. I read high gas prices here are because we are aligned with CA in gas controls and regulations, plus a bunch of local taxes added on to each gallon. Car insurance rates are higher than CA here to boot. Car registration and smog checks are required yearly. Most everything here is very expensive and seems like a rip off. Traffic is terrible for a metro area this size. No infrastructure planning for the tens of thousands CA transplants and you get a lot of traffic. Add in hazardous smoke/ash warnings from CA wildfires every summer and you got yourself a hot mess here in the Reno area.
