Review of Roanoke, Virginia

Roanoke Has Lots to Offer
Star Rating - 3/7/2019
I've lived in the Roanoke-Salem area all my live, and in Roanoke City for the past 21 years. I've seen so many positive changes. The city itself hovers around 100k population, and when including the surrounding areas (Salem City, Roanoke County, Botetourt, Franklin and Craig counties, etc.) we're around 300k. While the city itself does have its share of substandard housing, as does any other city, many good things have come to the area. Tourism is alive and well. There's something to do every day and every night. Live music is available everywhere. The Harvester Center in nearby Rocky Mount is a jewel. There's hiking, kayaking, and a world-class greenway that winds throughout the Roanoke Valley.

Recent Amtrak service was added, with a brand-new level-access platform in downtown. I recently traveled to DC for a weekend. A quick Uber ride from my home to the Amtrak platform, and then an easy and comfortable train ride to Union Station was a delight! Also in downtown Roanoke are many restaurants and a historic farmers' market.

If you're a fan of craft beer, you're in luck, as the Roanoke metro area boasts numerous craft breweries, including the east coast brewing operation and a huge modern tasting room for California-based Ballast Point. Plus, there's some sort of festival or outdoor concert going on all the time. There are two outdoor venues, in Roanoke: Elmwood Park, which as a 4000-seat amphitheater with at least eight events already scheduled for spring of 2019, and Dr. Pepper Park, with nine events currently on the schedule.

Then there's the Taubman Museum of Art, along with a dozen smaller galleries in the downtown area. Plus lots of modern downtown housing... with more on the way.

So, all things considered, Roanoke is a city that has lots to offer. Check it out. I really enjoy living here, and have no plans to leave!

Like many natives of Roanoke, Rob has lived in the area his entire life. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it verifies that he has no experience with another area to compare Roanoke to. He mentions that tourism is alive and well, but fails to mention that jobs in the tourism industry are notoriously low paying. He mentions the Taubman museum, but fails to mention that it couldn't hold a candle to museums in other major cities. He mentions "a dozen smaller galleries" without saying that these so called galleries "are less than a few thousand square feet in size; as big as a moderate apartment. He mentions that he has no plans to leave but withholds his education, income level or profession; is he even skilled enough to find work elsewhere? While Roanoke has seen some new construction "downtown" it is nonetheless a small low income area, with a household income around $40,000 a year. One who stops to considers the math would see that if there are two working adults in a household, and they, together earn a total of $40,000 a year, then they're both likely earning $20,000 yearly. With 40 hours in a work week and 50 weeks a year, there are 2000 work hours in a year. Divide that into $20,000 and you come up to $10/hr. Ten dollars an hour is what many jobs in this area pay. The real estate prices, cost of living, entertainment and cultural options are all suited to people in this income range.

I agree 100% with Rob and I am not a native! I moved to Roanoke about 3 years ago after living in Richmond Va for 28 years. It is such a gorgeous area with lots to do but at a slower pace than bigger cities. The people could not be nicer ......I know the names of all my neighbors and we talk on a regular basis as we bike, jog and walk the scenic streets. Many of us have different political views, come from different races and even have varying sexual orientations ......however this matters not to most and everyone is treated with respect. Festivals abound (when Coronavirus is gone) and fantastic restaurants are everywhere. I can walk to grocery, doctor, dentist, pharmacy, coffee and restaurants! As far as real estate....,prices are reasonable but going up as people discover this charming city. My house value has went up over $100,000 since I moved in. The schools is my area are rated some of the highest in the state. I feel very lucky to have found such a fantastic place to live and know I will be staying for the rest of my life.
