Review of Winnetka, Illinois

Living in a Norman Rockwell painting
Star Rating - 3/3/2008
This idyllic, leafy, close-in suburb north of Chicago comes straight out of a Frank Capra (or John Hughes - see Home Alone for a view of the housing stock and neighborhood feel) film. From the sandy beaches overlooking Lake Michigan to the 100 year old oak trees everywhere to the bucolic village green (site of the Memorial Day and 4th of July parades) to the local muni golf course with a great 18 and a superb kid-friendly 9, this remarkable enclave reminds many of a Norman Rockwell painting. Others might suggest Pleasantville. The cost of entry is high, but once inside all are warmly welcomed. Although the school facilities are old, the quality of the teachers is world class. And the people are genuinely Midwest-nice, with friends made easily through kids and schools. Wasn't born here but I'll never leave.
