Do you know that in 1918, Valdosta folks went on a murderous rampage and and lynched 13 Black folks in two weeks? If I were a person of color there, why on earth would I want to smile at people that had wished me great harm? The historical marker for Mary Turner (who was hung, set on fire, and her 8 month old baby being cut from her and stomped to death) was taken down from repeat local vandalism. This town needs to own up to its racist past and present.
