Review of Athens, Tennessee

Athens is great except for the healthcare.

Hi! I live in Athens, TN but am originally from Florida. Athens, TN is a beautiful city right between Chattanooga and Knoxville. We are 2 hours from Atlanta, GA, Nashville, TN, Asheville, NC, and Huntsville, AL. Their is so much to do here if you love the outdoors. I mean LOTS!!! The art scene is lacking but getting better. The restaurants are mostly fast food, and ma and pop restaurants. The ma and pop restaurants are the best though!! The tap water is delicious, the grocery stores a little pricey but have good sales. We have many new businesses moving into the area. Cleveland, TN is 20 minutes away and anything you can't find here you can find there. I love it here. The people are friendly, and it is beautiful. We get just enough snow to make it pretty, but than it melts right away. One issue I have, and this is why I am on this site is because there are not enough specialty physicians here. If you don't mind driving to Cleveland, you are all set!!! Come on down or up or over!!!!

Hi Mary and thanks for comments. besides what you have added what else should I know if I am thinking of moving there? My mother (74) is also thinking of moving to the area from Wisconsin for some better weather. I know its humid in the summer but is it really bad or does that last a long time? is there things to do for older folks in the area? Anything else I should know of the area would be great thanks. I am thinking for getting some land for a small hobby farm in the area myself

Hi Don, I don't know when you wrote your reply. I never got a notification. I am sorry. This summer, (2021), has been unseasonably cool. 80's. We had some 90's last week but 80's next week. I think considering your mothers age and possible health needs, you might consider the Loudon/Lenoir City area as it is closer to the healthcare systems of Knoxville, TN but is still "small town" living. There is much more for older folks to do there as far as window shopping, dining out, museums, etc. Unless she likes outdoorsy type stuff. I love Athens, but as I get older, (late 50's), its hard to get to Knoxville for specialized healthcare. I want to sell my home for that reason. It just depends what your mother likes to do for fun. We have a wonderful senior center, and some good family restaurants. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities. My only complaint is the lack of good specialized healthcare in the immediate area. This would be a great place for hobby farm!
