Review of Richland, Washington

Very expensive compared to the south
Star Rating - 9/28/2016
Moved here in Dec 2015. Winters are mild. Drivers are horrible. Everything is brown unless you water, water and water some more. Wind is strong. Summers are very cool compared to the south. Great bike paths. Very expensive housing both rent and own. Medical care is more expensive. The arts have no credit here. Eating out is expensive. There is a 21% plus markup on spirits. You have to drive 2 plus hours to find something to do that you would commonly find in other places for an area of this size. Overall I can't see myself staying for any length of time. With the nuclear plants/waste it reminds me of a huge kitty liter box. The people here are not friendly.

Sharon, I've lived in the Tri-Cities since 1990 and I don't find the people "not friendly". If I walk by minding my own business and don't interact, then I'm not met with a lot of people reaching out to greet me. But when I reach out and interact with them they readily respond and cordial and friendly. I find how I am treated is directly proportionate to how I am treating others. For me to be an extrovert is difficult and takes effort because I am generally an introvert. As for bad drivers - that is true in any large metro-complex, The Tri-Cities metro population is 253 thousand, making it the 2nd largest city in the state of WA. With that many drivers, you are going to encounter what can be viewed as bad drivers. The real problem in my opinion though, is that people are in too much of a hurry to get from point A to point B because they know it takes 12 minutes to get there so they allow 13 minutes of travel time, and therefore are rushed to get where they are going. We are also getting an influx of driver's from different states, and I have no idea how they were taught to drive. Yes, the so called "sin tax" in WA is high, so in the gasoline tax. But we are run by the I-5 corridor which is primarily "spend it all and tax more" politicians, instead of fiscally responsible adults.

I have lived in the Tri-Cities area now for two years, after one year in Seattle area and 50 years in North Idaho. I can’t say I’m overly impressed. It seems like we’ve stepped back in time 30 years with what is available to do in the area. There is no “downtown” area. It feels very much like three very disconnected cities. The people here have been friendly, best neighbors we’ve ever had by far. But there are very few unique restaurants that we have found. Prices for housing and other things seem very high. We love to be outdoors, but find the Columbia river to be dirty and uninviting, and nearby hiking to be dusty, windy, and not very scenic. We will stay in the area until my husband retires and then we’re out of here.
