I've lived in this city for ~16 years (my whole life) and it's ok, but your experience of the city in entirely based on where you live/visit in the city. Unfortunately, the city's past was full of segregational housing practices that largely shaped the city, for better and for worse. Neighborhoods with higher populations of minorities like latinos and black people were given much fewer opportunities to grow financially, while neighborhoods with higher white populations were given more. This practice, known as redlining, lead to extreme poverty and where there's poverty, there's often violence. However, some of the neighborhoods have seen growth. For example, the area i'm from once had a relatively large hispanic/latino population and was at one point very poor, it has since the early 2000s become a decent place to live. For me, I have had a relatively positive experience growing up in the city, but I understand not everone here has. Still though, Milwaukee can be a great place to live and if the issues of poverty and violence can be solved, it could become a really great place to live.
