Review of Columbus, Ohio

Counting down the days until I move.

I chose OSU to attend graduate school for both M.S. and PhD programs. I can say without hesitation that attending OSU and moving to Columbus was a mistake. I will begin by mirroring what I notice other reviewers have noted: Columbus is a very dangerous city. To be fair, my experience was limited to campus area, downtown, and occasional trips to metro parks. I have personally be affected by crime in all of these areas. Recently in April of 2021, a large "party" ensued (known as Chitt fest) for the street it occurs on, resulted in dozens of vehicles being destroyed along with other property damage. The campus area in general is very unsafe, with multiple shootings and frequent muggings/stabbings occuring near campus. Each year I have resided here, the homicide rate has increased and has expanded outward into the suburbs. Topping crime is an incredibly dense urban jungle, with neighborhoods being built literally on top of another. Weather is bi-polar most of the year, and only adds to the misery of there being nothing to do but shop at the endless retail store selection, or eat at one of the endless fast food establishments. Columbus needs a complete re-invention and something else to fixate on other than college football. Come here for a good education, and get out.

OSU offers the worst education in the country. They are at the bottom of every list and any one even failing grades can make their PHD programs.

Having lived in several big Midwestern cities and on the west coast, columbus lacks identity compared to any other city its size. Crime is def a serious issue there and is beginning to negatively affect OSU. I don't know if I would term OSU a "great" education however, and compared to some of the more selective research schools in the Midwest.

I had to stop in Columbus in 2019 for a corporate sponsored convention. Saying it is a urban jungle is a understatement. No offense to Ohio, there are a lot of very pretty natural areas there but Columbus is not one of them. Cleveland and Cincinnati are much nicer in my opinion with more charm and nature. Columbus is the definition of a gritty blue collar city.

Lived in Cinti. and on UC faculty for over 40 years. The best move of my life is to have retired and left Cinti. for Tucson. In academics OSU far outranks UC and the city is as unimaginative a place as I've ever seen. Follows the "ten-year rule"; wait a decade until other cities have tried new ideas first then try them (and claim credit). The Bengals, for those who care, are perpetual losers that play in a stadium Hamilton County will never pay off. CSO is good but never great. Overall, Cinti. is and always has been mediocre. Columbus is dynamic and growing and OSU is one of the top-ranked public universities in the country (vs. mid-third-tier UC). Franklin County has not wasted tax-payer funds building stadiums for losing sports teams. Have a grown child in Columbus so I am familiar with the city. If I had to move back to OH I would choose Columbus and avoid Cinti. like the plague. The weather in both is about the same except Cinti. is subject to more tornadoes.
