Review of McDonough, Georgia

Some Good, Some Not-So-Good
Star Rating - 12/21/2019
When I moved here a few years ago from the northeast, I was hoping to live the rest of my life in McDonough. I love the warmer climate, especially our spring and fall months and mostly mild winters.

When I noticed that Christian churches were everywhere, I hoped to find a progressive and community minded place to make friends and serve God. Sadly, in the 21st century it seems churches here are still segregated by race and most concentrate on Bible studies rather than helping others.

Our cost of living is deceptive; house prices and property taxes are reasonable but sales tax on EVERYTHING (food and clothing) plus high food costs eat up any savings. I will never understand why basic grocery items such as a box of cereal or can of coffee is 5 to 15 percent more expensive than in PA or NY.

I thought living 25 miles southeast of Atlanta would be an easy commute for work but I was dead wrong. Traffic here is crazy since road improvements were not planned as the population grew. So working in Atlanta is at least a 2 hours daily commute and wages in Henry county are pathetically low.

I can't comment on schools, since my children are grown but I have noticed a lack of basic civil services: street lights, police patrols, road repairs & guard rails, waste & recycling centers, or animal control.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have tried a smaller metro Georgia area like Augusta or Athens - any place with the same climate and less traffic.

Maybe the commute is longer going north of Atlanta. I work just SE of ATL and it takes me 40 min drive, all back roads with no traffic. I have at least 3 -4 different ways to get to work, each about equal time. Having previously lived in southern MD commuting into DC - the commute is way better. My kids are in Ola area schools. Good schools I agree. Lot of after school activities / sports. Can be pricey. A lot of support for my special needs daughter. Medical is pretty good - Children's Hospital is in ATL and operates urgent care nearby. Housing was really affordable when I moved here 15 years ago, but is more expensive now. Lot more people here now then when I arrived 15 years ago. Mcdonough is getting too crowded for me really. I don't go into town much. New housing and new commercial development are driving out the semi-rural atmosphere that still lingered here. Can be hard to find work locally unless you are in the trades or willing to drive into ATL. Has been a good place to raise kids so far. Crime is picking up coming in from Stockbridge somewhat, but overall it's a pretty safe location. Whether it suits you or not is up to individual circumstances.

Hi, Have you heard of Revelations of Jesus Christ Ministry? I was looking into this city because that's where they are based and I read your comment. Finding a God fearing ministry is hard but possible so please check them out. Pastor Werks also has a YouTube channel under that name and meets up for Sunday services.
