You aint from around here
Star Rating - 2/19/2020
I have lived here now for over five years, originally from the west coast and here is my top 10 for why you should NOT move here.

#1 The Culture: They have none, it is neither northern nor southern. Nothing to gives them an identity except for lots of farms with fences and distilleries which are they only thing good they have going here.
#2 The People: rudeness, social ignorance and small mindedness are pervasive here even in the city, they seem to be in their own world can't hold a door open or say hello to save their life. These folks need to learn some manners.
#3 Politics: lots of commercials about some rednecks plowing with mules and a governor who "Aint from around here" , meaning your an outsider. Most in this area just votes for whatever will give them the best deal. they have no principles neither left nor right wing.
#4 Education: lots of ignorance even in the burbs and city, "schoolin aint a prioitize here".
#5 Driving and roads: Drivers from here are unfamiliar with how to use turn signals, seems to be a outsiders concept. Back country roads are something out of third world countries and lack any logic in their building, often one lane roads.
#6 What they care about - College sports and that's about it. UK this and UK that, You see more people with UK flags here for sports, but no other college.
#7 Patriotism: and speaking of flags, you never see an American flag flying any place, they are a very unpatriotic people.
#8 Housing: not exactly what you expect, houses are overpriced and not much value. Lots of Vinyl villages surrounded by giant horse farms owned by old money families.
#9 Cuisine: When the local cuisine is a "Hot Brown" that says it all or other inventions like burgoo made from leftovers. not very creative or good.
#10 The Economy: Not much happening here except for some dirty industry , horse semen and bourbon.
#11 Bonus item - Hygiene: hand washing appears to also be an outsider concept. People never wash their hands here after using the rest room.

Bottom line: If You are not from here, don't move here, the locals don't want you, Take your money and happiness some place else. If you are from here, please stay here we don't want you infecting the rest of the country with your ignorance or unfriendly manners.

This review is accurate. I grew up in Lexington and got two degrees from UK. I subsequently lived in various towns and cities in Arkansas, Florida, and California. I can't recommend my hometown. It's ill-equipped for its winter weather, unlike places like Boston or Rochester. Summer is very humid. The reason UK sports are an obsession is that there are no professional sports teams. If you end up there, I recommend making the best of it by spending free time in the Red River Gorge area that's an hour or so to the Southeast, and living as close as possible to the UK campus so you can take advantage of the university's offerings. I don't know if they still have it, but UK used to have a program that provided completely free tuition, including for degrees, to students over 65. If they sell have that, it could be worth it to retire there, especially if you want to pursue a PhD. Once off the campus, the city is insular and the epitome of "white bread" culture. The community exudes a smugness that one wouldn't necessarily expect in such a place. It's basically an overgrown small town, where everyone is critical of everyone else's choice of church and the ordinary folks see themselves as gentry. It's the kind of place where every tenth car's muffler is held on with a coat hanger, evey 5th car has a Jesus bumper sticker, and every weekend there is a "debutante ball" for another snooty white chick. Is it better than St. Petersburg Florida? Absolutely. Is it better than Little Rock Arkansas? No. Also, Kentucky is tobacco country. About 1/3 of adults smoke, so if smoking bothers you, anywhere in the state is a bad place to be. Because there are so many smokers, the health status of the community is not good.

Whoever this person is, they obviously didn't enjoy the Motel 6 they stayed at.

The only thing accurate in this review is #5, people here don't know how to use turn signals. Thurston must be a very unhappy person currently yelling at kids to stay off his lawn. Please disregard his review as it is not an accurate depiction of Lexington at all!

Thurston is not a happy person. His review is WAY off base with the exception that #5 is correct, nobody uses their turn signal. He must outside right now yelling at kids to stay off his lawn. California is calling man, heed its call!

First off, how in the world would you know if people wash their hands after using the restroom? Speaking of small mindedness, Just because We dont have the "identity" you would expect doent mean we do not have one. You basically stated what our identity was in you completely incorrect assessment of our city. MOST... who visit or come to live here, end up spending most of their life here or wishing they were here. I really do not know how you can say that we arent patriotic, you come from the LEAST patriotic part of the country. You literally are the stereotypical "west coaster". Youre probably treated as an outsider because of how cynical, pessimistic, unsavory and uninteresting you are. the article you posted on literally said how great of a value it is to live here financially, yet you think you know better....speaking of small mindedness, the whole world loves the bourbon, and horses that come from here, yet you blow it off as if its a ridiculous identity. Plus, why would anyone who lives in a college town, and likes their team, have flags waving around representing other colleges? Anyway, all you proved is how ignorant you are about where you live, nobody is stopping you from going back to where you came from, which you probably left because of all the garbage taking place there, and then want it to be just like home, but better, when you get here. So take your tiny opinion, which you derived from your tiny experience elsewhere. THANKS! Have a great day!! God Bless America! wait....you probably dont believe in God. I dont think there are any safe spaces around here.

I fell in love with this area the first time I visited. Over the next 5 years I made several more trips and loved it even more each time. I finally made my desire to move here a reality and have been here 6 years. I am not sure what areas or groups you spend your time around, but I disagree with every thing you stated. People are kind, not all, but most. Our Nations flag waves at many homes and businesses. There are many stunning neighborhoods with brick homes, and other lovely neighboor hoods too. The roads are well kept as far as paving and street sweeping. The utility and city services have never performed below 100%, in my opinion. There are many other things to do for a person willing to look for options...events, places of interest, many parks and trails for hiking / biking, art, cool specialty shops, restaurants of all types with delicious and health foods. Yes, the hot brown is an okl KY staple and they love their basketball, but what town doesn't have a local traditional favorite food and strongly support their sports team. I think you should try to be a little more open minded and give the place a chance - not be so biased, a state of mind that I have seen from many west coasters I know. Give yourself a chance to experience new things you may end up enjoying. If not, please journey elsewhere to a place you would be proud to live and not be so upity passing your judgement on the home many off us love. Happy trails!

If you are from Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, Virginia (north), DC, Delaware, Road Island, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, or Massachusetts, we don't want you in our state. Take your bad ideas and bad policies back to the hellscape you created for yourself and your kids.
