Review of Prescott, Arizona

Not for Families
Star Rating - 8/2/2019
Prescott is a great place to live if you are a retired professional (i.e. doctor, lawyer, etc). If you have a family it is horrible. Houses are unaffordable (you can get a very small dump to live in for $200,00 +), the salaries do not match the cost of living, the school systems are sub-par (the school curriculum was 1-2 years behind from where we came from in the midwest), public education for 3 kids cost me over a $1,000 to enroll them this year (this is not the money they take out of my paycheck for taxes. That came out of my checking account.), sales tax is almost 10% and there is hardly anything to do for families. The police spend too much time policing the downtown area for parking tickets/minor traffic problems and take a long time to arrive at any real emergency. I guess if you are coming from CA you don't see anything wrong with this, but coming from the midwest I literally hate living here.

Sorry you dislike it so much Sandra but the vast majority of residents could not disagree with you more. Prescott's climate and in particular its air quality is always rated as one of the most desirable in the entire united states. Moreover, the town is literally loaded with hiking trails and there are multiple lakes and parks throughout the town. Prescott is indeed an ideal retirement community but it is also a richly historic place to live for anyone. I have spend an abundance of time in the midwest and the weather is horrible for all but a couple of months with miserably cold winter weather and miserably humid weather in the summer. Do some research online and you will find all sorts of great family activities online that you can do with your kids.

I have to say Sandra I live in Ohio and currently still reside in NE Ohio. If you want cheap housing then the Midwest is the ONLY region of the country to get it. But you get what you pay for, lousy winters, overcast cloudy days most of the year, and nothing to do is except drive through endless miles of flat farmland. Not sure what you're looking for but in our moving/housing search everywhere in the country is more expensive than the Midwest and it's for a reason. Don't misunderstand, the Midwest is fine but make no mistake compared to other parts of the country it can't compare.

$200k is unaffordable? I don't think your expectations are realistic coming from the midwest. Coming from CA our median home price is $1.16mil and median income is $65k, so this area seems much more affordable. Although jobs in certain fields do seem to be sparse. Probably a lot depends on what career you have.

I am retired and I live it here. I guess I agree with your initial statement, but you have left out all the many positive aspects of living in Prescott.
