Review of Fairbanks, Alaska

Interested in Fairbanks
Star Rating - 5/27/2011
Comments about Fairbanks, both positive and negative, are of interest to me. Was in Fairbanks this past March [and north on Cleary Summit] and fell in love with the general area. Seriously considering relocating, though unable to make a move at this time [housing market].

Realize that being somewhere on vacation and living somewhere are two entirely different things. Having said that, it has turned out that places I've decided to visit are places I eventually lived, anywhere from 10-21+ years.

In the meantime, hope to return to Alaska to see more of this amazing state, and hopefully to see those amazing night skies again.

Thanks for replying; Shawn, unfortunately I lost my long-time job in 2014 and that along with other twists and turns in subsequent years have pretty much guaranteed I'll be staying where I am. After that first visit in March 2011, I returned in Feb 2012 and Jan 2013 to see if I still felt the same--I did, but while it was always a long shot, events placed relocating out of reach. I *did* make it back in 2017, and that was really important to me. I haven't been back since, but hopefully I can visit again someday! Judy, I love the hillside area and enjoy driving around there on my way to/from Cleary Summit, where I love to stay when I visit. I hear y'all got some SNOW this year--way more than usual! Along with some gorgeous Auroras, as always. Hopefully you are still there and enjoying life--sorry I didn't respond sooner--I just saw today, 4/7/2022, that anyone had replied!

Well, what was the outcome? Did you move to Fairbanks? We too are thinking of moving there, the comments below are very interesting. Scarry, since I have 2 teens and a 3rd grader. We lived in Anchorage and moved back to Texas, now the husband wants to go back, but this time to Fairbanks. I wondered about the homeless population, and drugs as well.

If you liked visiting, you would love living here. It is a great place to live. I've always said Fairbanks was a 'terrible place to visit, but a great place to live' (some people don't get the place) but you may be ahead of the game. Live in the hills around town, where there are warmer winter temperatures, nice views and trails all around. Fairbanks is a close knit community, but people are totally free to be who they are and live their own lives. There is no societal expectation of how you might live (many choose dry cabins without plumbing, and live high quality lives in them). Anyway, if it's of interest then you should move to Fairbanks for the huge skies, endless, uninhabiited hills, and aurora shows.
