Review of Charleston, South Carolina

trying to figure out best place for me
Star Rating - 9/10/2011
I would like to relocate to a more affordable area with lower property taxes and to a city that still has culture, diversity, music and art scene...that is chic, hip and still earthy. I currently live right outside of NYC but, my taxes are killing me so I am thinking of relocating to Charleston. I also like places that have that old world historic charm...and the ocean is nice as well. I have never been to Charleston..but, on the surface it seems great..however the comments about it being redneck and the place closest to hell I wonder about. I am used to places such as NYC or San Francisco..or Boston..which are all are my favorite places..(but too expensive) I also want to live where there is warmer weather year round. I lived in Miami at one point and absolutely hated it there with a passion..way too fake for me. I love the people in Maine but, it is too cold and boring there. Does anyone have any suggestions what would be a good place for me?

Don't visit Charleston and be sold--living here is a whole other ball of wax. NOT commuter friendly, but commuting is the only way to get to the few places that actually hire. Beaches are shoddy, poorly kept and dirty to boot. Cost of living is flat out ridiculous--with both rentals and sales through the roof as far as cost. Skip this place, you won't be sorry.

I have just visited Charleston for the first time, and I fell in love with it! It is a well preserved piece of history, and those who cannot appreciate the beauty of that are closed minded, and rather frumpy. The best way to get around the historic downtown district (where parking is limited) is by foot or bike. Everything in Downtown Charleston is within walking distance, and yet another great way to experience the rich History. You can't see it if you are too busy trying to fly through the streets in a car. My husband and I stayed in a beautiful Bed and Breakfast, and once we parked our car there, we walked to everything including the beach! We would not want to have it any other way. I am not sure about the "redneck" or "closest place to Hell" statements. The Southern Hospitality that was shown to my husband and I was exemplary! The cost of living in Charleston is about 10% higher than the National average. I am not sure how that is in comparison to where you currently live. The only way to know for sure if Charleston is a fit for you, is to visit the place yourself. It has a lot to offer, and even if you don't move there you'll at least have a good vacation seeing the beauty of it, and experiencing all the rich history it has to offer! Don't let some of these other downers on here deter you from doing what you feel is best. What doesn't work for some, may work for others. I would at least recommend a visit before deciding where to move. Hope this helps!

Hilarious. High taxes, huh? That would be because of the democrat policies that people vote for in those cities you mentioned. Too funny that people vote that way & then complain about the high taxes and end up moving away.
