Review of Ashland, Kentucky

economic blight
Star Rating - 7/1/2014
I've lived in Ashland for 5 yrs now. It is lovely in its natural surroundings but if you need a job and aren't an engineer or truck driver--run far away. It is a dead town with many dilapidated, rotting empty run down homes and businesses. There are NO jobs and yes AK steel did close and the power plant is set to close down. THe property taxes are high--they tax on anything they can. There is nothing to do and i have never seen a place so dead. It is sad the people are nice and it is gorgeous but there is way more unemployment than your page is showing most people arent recorded i guess...just do an average online job look you will see--or get a paper you will see. Retirees may do well here but few else. I love our home I have stunning views and see wildlife all day everyday..its quiet, peaceful, private and yet just minutes to town..but ive been without a job for too long..so we are looking to move. Breaks my heart our property is awesome and i cant find anything like it anywhere ive looked..but the economy is just about to get worse here when the power plant closes...also gas here is higher than avg despite living next to the marathon refinery. PS water is highly chloronated but air quality is fine..fresh mountain air out here in the country. No cell service in our house but i could care less. If i was rich id never leave but we are struggling so we have to go where some jobs actually come up daily on an internet search or they actually have some on a reg basis at the local temp agency.

I list 10-20 jobs a week I find on the internet & facebook and not all are minimum wage jobs. Like most places people quit advertising in the paper years ago for employees. Everyone says there is nothing to do. I'm low income & find plenty of stuff to do for free or cheap. You just need to look.
