Review of Ashburn, Virginia

Too dense and costly
Star Rating - 10/11/2018
We’ve lived here for 10 months and it’s not awesome. The housing costs are insane and the yards are postage stamps with apartments and townhomes lining every road and backing up to single family home neighborhoods. The population is dense. The roads in Ashburn are well maintained and wide, with landscaping that helps hide just how densely it is developed. I will say the community was well-planned to accommodate such a huge load of people. There are strip malls and shopping centers at every corner. Because of this, we call it Cashburn. Sure you may earn $150,000, but the town and surrounding areas make sure you have a million things to spend it on. Go outside of Cashburn, everything is cheaper: dining, gas, entertainment. Most homes are in HOA neighborhoods and the fees are exorbitant. The library system is excellent. There’s a great homeschool community. There are just too many people, not enough house or yard for the money, and costs for the many family activities aren’t friendly for large families. There are some free events here and there. If you’re coming from NY or CA, you may be pleased with Ashburn. Otherwise, it’s sticker shock that doesn’t wear off.
