Review of Freeport, Illinois

I like Freeport I just don't like what it's become

I've lived here since the mid 1970's and only moved away for a short time before returning. We love the fact Freeport is close to many great midwest attractions. Unfortunately Freeport has been in a state of decline for many years and probably hasn't reached bottom yet. The large companies that once called this home have left or been reduced to almost nothing. There are many empty factories, buildings and homes. Retail has left as well leaving empty buildings that have sat for years and decades. Property taxes are rising we paid low 30's for our house and pay $3500. in taxes that they say is worth far more than we can sell it. Our water bills are in the $100 a month range. They want to raise the tax on all utilities as much as they can. Our local government pension fund is under fund by $40 million dollars which has to be funded somehow. Borrowing by a bond sale looks like it will be done to fund it but, that money still has to be repaid. Virtually all of our streets are in need of rebuilding. A new water treatment plant, wells, water mains, storm sewer, sewer lines and waste water plant are all in need of replacing. The city demos houses and buildings every year to get rid of the blight. Driving down almost any street you will see homes in need of major repairs or waiting for demolishment. Crime has increased dramatically but, 2017 was slightly better to be fair. It may sound like I don't like Freeport but actually I like Freeport I just don't like what it has become. Freeport has a very rich history that could be capitalized on. The central location with Chicago, Madison, Dubuque, Quad Cities and even St Louis make Freeport an excellent location for business. I hope Freeport can get the leaders it needs that can turn it around and make this tired city back into the gem it deserves to be again. For us we intend to move away as soon as we can.

Well you keep moving back here, so you must love it. People do not go back to places that suck! Everyone that leaves Freeport realizes that they are misssing out anywhere else and they move back once reality kicks them in the wallet. You people kill me going on websites and leaving bad reviews for such a great town, just because you don't want anyone else moving here. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Its like the dude that struck gold and went back and told everyone else that there was none up there. People are so selfish. Freeport is great. Come see for yourself. Start at Read Park, Then Goodwill and then Logan's. That is a good start.

Freeport is still a gem. It’s a gem that simply needs to be shined up a little. All over the world people are forced into paying $2550-$5000 a month for apartments that in some cases are the size of closets. Hong Kong's housing situation is so bad that they have caged housing and the people literally rent dog cages to live in. In Freeport, a person can own their own huge 5-bedroom house for less than $80,000. In a town that has tons to offer no less. Name a another (GOOD) town that can offer that in America. A 1 hour and 55 min road trip in any direction leads you to many beautiful places such as Chicago's lakefront, Milwaukee's lakefront, Wisconsin Dells. and hundreds of other things. Also unheard of in most places. It is the perfect town. But some of the most beautiful things can be seen right here in Freeport. I love the waterfall. Chicago doesn't even have a waterfall. Most places don’t have a waterfall. Freeport is actually older than Chicago but seems to get overlooked because of the fact that most people think of Chicago when planning trips to Illinois. Freeport is a secret goldmine waiting to be found. It’s in the perfect location for a town to flourish. To become a better town, all Freeport really needs is an Amazon, some type of resort, the few abandoned houses sold and fixed up and a few more streets paved. Freeport is a beautiful town with a lot of potential. The retail business is dead everywhere, that’s not the towns’ fault. It’s the internet’s fault. But nonetheless those empty buildings are opportunities for growth. It’s not as if, those are vacant lots they're empty buildings. That is a good thing. The American dream is alive and well here in Freeport. Jane and John Doe can move here to Freeport, comfortably buy a house, rent a cheap storefront and start a business, feed their kids, and still have money left to put in the bank. That's also unheard of during this day and age. Freeport is great.

You've been here since the 70's..... we just moved here. What happened? Someone said - an Equity firm came in like locusts - stripped out the businesses and left the rubble. Freeport used to be the 4th largest manufacturing area in the State. Used to hold a lot of high paying office jobs too. Would love to know who the Equity firm was - someone said it was a company that Mitt Romney was a partner in - they ate up everything of value and carried it away. Any insight?
