Review of Greenville, South Carolina

Balanced review of Greenville, SC
Star Rating - 7/11/2021
I moved here in 2019 from the northeast. There are a lot of positives about living in the city of Greenville and there are negatives as well. Overall, I am mostly satisfied living here and hope my review will help others who are researching the best places to live.
First the positives. The City of Greenville has one of the nicest downtown areas that I have seen/experienced. The Falls Park on the Reedy is a beautiful place to walk, bike or just relax. It was very well planned out to be a part of the downtown area as well as linking Traveler's Rest and other areas (more extensions are planned). There are a ton of restaurants with a wide variety of food choices. There are lots of free outdoor events like festivals and concerts. There is an active, great arts scene. The weather is so much better than the northeast. Traffic is reasonable (the locals think it's terrible but apparently they've never seen Atlanta, NYC or Boston traffic). Real estate is much cheaper here. Overall the cost of living is less. There are a lot of people relocating here so if you want to make new friends (now that we are past the worst of COVID), it's possible to do so but you do have to make the effort. (Join Meetup groups, bookclubs, join a gym and talk to people, wave and say hello to your neighbors, join a church or clubs). I bought a house here in a mixed neighborhood and absolutely love it. I know my neighbors and everyone waves/says hello when you walk down the street or around the neighborhood. People are much friendlier in that regard than they are up north. I'm sure every neighborhood isn't like mine (the high-priced, snobby areas where everyone is locked inside their houses afraid of everyone) so be choosy about where you want to settle down. And you have to make the effort as well to say "hello" and get to know people.
Now for the negatives. I am a moderate/independent (don't belong to any political party and have voted for both Democrats and Republicans in the past but this current Republican/Trump-worshipping regime gives me nothing to be voting Republic for), so I knew I would not be comfortable with the current political climate here. While you will find more Democrats or moderates here than in the outskirts of the city, it is still very much "T-rump country". This is heavy Bible-belt and gun-toting country. (Personally I'm perplexed as to how one can be "Pro-Life and Pro-Gun" at the same time but we'll leave that discussion for another forum.). The education system is appalling except for perhaps a handful of schools or private ones. (I don't have children of school age but if I did, I would not have moved here.). Many people home-school their children who really shouldn't. Their level of education leaves much to be desired and the school system doesn't seem to take much interest in ensuring that home-schooled children are actually learning anything). There are daily news reports of people being shot/murdered, (not in the downtown area but in the outskirts). The most egregious was hearing about a 2 year old who had picked up a gun that was left lying around in the house and shot himself dead. Was ruled an accident and no further action was taken against the parents for being negligent, etc.. (WTH???). The roads are not maintained nor are they wide enough so there are many more fatal accidents here than in the northeast. I was really shocked by this when I first moved here but have become somewhat adjusted to it (I guess). I try not to drive too much or at night out on those "country" roads. The bugs here are ridiculously large and of varieties I'd not seen in the northeast. Lots of spiders and poisonous ones as well (Black Widow spiders). Regular treatments outside and around the house by an exterminator are mandatory here.) Lots of snakes here also, some poisonous. But there are many beneficial snakes as well, so you have to learn to differentiate. Fireworks are legal here and every ya-hoo around seems to be shooting them off all year long for no particular reason. July 4th and New Years are fine and to be expected, but Memorial Day? Every single Friday night? Random Tuesdays or Wednesdays? Enough already. There is an international airport (GSP) nearby but the number of places with direct flights to/from is quite limited compared to what I was used to in the northeast. COVID has limited my travels this past year and a half so it's not been a major issue, but it does mean that when friends/family will be visiting that they mostly will not be able to get a direct flight here. Same for going other places (obviously). Lastly, medical care here is just okay. I was used to the best-of-the-best up north so am a bit spoiled. Luckily I am quite healthy but if something major were to happen, I'd be going back north for treatment. You just won't find many doctors down here who graduated from the top medical schools. I think that about sums it up. Hope this helps someone decide whether Greenville, SC is for them.

Wow! Everything about your tone says spoiled, condescending, holier than thou yankee. Why in the world did you ever move here? Did you not "test the waters" by renting first like common sense would dictate? Please go back and make you and me and others raised in the south happy.

TU so much for the honest review. I sincerely agree with your Red vs Blue issue. I currently live in NC and have the same issue here. It is getting a little better as all the Yankees are coming in steadily. I am trying to find a new town and am reading all reviews I can. TU for both pro and con advise. And, I am just as confused as you about the pro-everything??

Move back north and take your vote. I’m getting out of this democrat hell in New York, to be free from these ridiculous rules. It’s easy to be a democrat with no kids. No more mean tweets though!! Just a ruined country

Following up to my earlier post. Haven’t been on here in awhile and hadn’t seen the replies. Just to set the record straight, I did rent for a year here before deciding to stay. I liked enough of it to make that decision. I don’t have to like everything about a place in order to think it is somewhere I want to live. Any of you who chose to reply with rude, nasty and uninformed comments should just post your own review instead. America is about diversity of lots of things, including opinions. If you actually live here, or have recently, and think Greenville has no flaws, then good for you. Write your own review. But the point of this website is to provide a forum for people who are looking to relocate to find information from people who live in the area. Always will be pros and cons to any place. So, NO, I will not go back to the Northeast and I stand by everything that I wrote. If you don’t like it, move on. Write your own review. (Especially those that don’t even live here but chose to bash me. Yeah, that’s just priceless. Looks like your sole purpose is to spew hate and divisiveness.)

Kate, I was laughing so hard at some of the issues you commented on, that it made my day. I'm from Chicago and moved to Knoxville a year ago when my husband retired, and am now thinking of moving to South Carolina because, one, we have many friends in various cities (Beaufort, Daniels Island and Charleston) and only 2 here, and two, SC has more, and much better golf courses than here. As avid golfers, we're disappointed with all the courses we've tried here. Not nearly as nice as the ones back home - unless, of course, you join an expensive club, but from what I'm reading about all of these cities, SC doesn't sound desirable, especially about the medical aspect, which is scary. At least Knoxville has the University of Tennessee, which is supposed to be top-notch. I found your review thorough, to the point, and hitting on all the areas I was interested in. Thank you for your in-depth analysis. It was extremely helpful. Bugs as big as my head, fireworks, and gun-totin' hotheads is not my cup of tea.

Interesting review with points that I both agree and disagree with. I have lived in Greenville for most of my 56 years of life and have lived in other areas of the South. I am biased but also believe some people will never be happy in any location. Debbie downer types where the grass is always greener on the other side. Here are a few points that may help others. 1) if bugs are an issue for you then anywhere, I repeat anywhere in the South has high insect populations. Do your research. Greenville is no Bug magnet. The further south you go or closer to coastal areas the higher the insect populations get. Know what you are getting into. BTW, I’ll trade some insects for mild winters and lots of sunshine any day. Bugs don’t like snow BTW. Take your pick. 2) Snakes. Greenville has one poisonous snake (copperhead) in any significant number. I know snakes quite well. Rattle snakes in the mountains but never seen one in Greenville City and cotton mouths are not here. The majority of snakes are non-poisonous varieties and great to have around to control any rodent populations. Again, this is the South and the climate is similar to a rain forest. Yes we have snakes and the further south you go the more you will encounter. Schools. Appalling is pretty strong but they are certainly subpar. There are numerous Charter schools that have strong curriculums but only the brightest get in. The schools are faced with multiple issues, one being under funded. Second is the influx of spanish speaking people that overwhelm the teachers with kids fighting a language barrier that inhibits their ability teach as they should be able to. This hurts all the kids in the school systems and needs to be addressed. I went to public school. Things were much different in those times. We put both of our kids through private school. Politics. I would focus on things like Climate, safety, economy and cost of living. If those are good then quit complaining. If not then choose another area that better suits your beliefs. Yes, this is conservative country and happy that it is. Some things you failed to mention. 1) Thriving economy with low unemployment. 2) reasonable cost of living and taxes. Both are higher than they used to be but much better than many areas. 3) Location. 1 hour from the mountains and 3 hours from the coast. Hard to beat. FYI, I live in the City limits and believe it is much different than outlying areas. Urban sprawl is an issue in the county. Trees being mowed down and ugly boxes going up is common place. I could not live in may areas of the county because of this. Be careful where you choose to buy. I would stay close to town or in more established neighborhoods unless you want acreage. Yes it costs more but resale is better and just a better overall experience imo. I guess i live in one of the so called snobish neighborhoods where people hide in their houses. Lol! Everyone walks, says hello, helps their neighbors and socializes. We have regular get together. Far different than what you describe.

Greenville does have a Medical School and many fine physicians. Prisma Greenville Memorial is a teaching hospital. You need to search a little and of course we need more physicians for this growing community.. Top medical schools do not always make good physicians but it helps to have a physician with ties to teaching and who keeps up with current medical developments. GSP is growing and many more direct flights are available but we are not Boston, New York, Atlanta… Greenville is a small city so you may have to Connect thru Charlotte. Yes, we have bugs and snakes and ways to avoid them! However , Lyme Disease is not bad here as in the northeast corridor. People are kind and neighborly and that is really important to me, weather is good with 4 seasons, lots of sunshine and never horribly cold.

We moved to Greenville 10 years ago. We love it here. Friendly people, theaters (5), symphony, restaurants, parks, mountains 30 min away, free outside music twice a week. Greenville does have a high crime rate, but it's attributed to property crime (3202 per 100,000). We have a homeless population and many poor who will gladly enter your car and steal anything they can. Our murder rate is low (3.7 per 100.000) as compared to my hometown of Buffalo NY (25 per 100,000). The downtown area is VERY safe. Our baseball team, the Greenville Drive a class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, does fireworks every Friday night during the season. People here like fireworks. People here also like guns, it's a southern thing. If someone here robs a store they'll likely be shot by a civilian.
