Review of Mamou, Louisiana

Going Back Home
Star Rating - 10/9/2020
If you ever want to go back in time, Mamou is a place you may want to check out. Although the town dynamics have changed over the last 40 years, I moved back to my native town in hopes of enjoying a slower pace of life and it has delivered. The streets “roll-up” at 6:00 pm and normally don’t unroll till 6:00 am the next day. Don’t expect to see a Wal-Mart or McDonalds but a 15 minute drive to the south will get you these places. Hot and humid in the summer but very mild winters with no snow. The folk here are friendly but just as in other cities and towns there are exceptions to that also. A unique culture exists in this small town and weather and politics are the main stay of most conversations. It is extremely affordable to live especially for individuals on fixed incomes. Mamou as a whole is a safe community with a good hospital and very descent school system. Poor people do live here and you want find any beggars on the streets. Most people in this small community are very religious and proud of their heritage and their community. All one need do is drive up to a house, knock on the door and they are greeted with a warm smile and usually a good cup of hot Community Coffee. Be prepared to relax and enjoy.
