Review of St. Mar,

Not A Place I Would Recommend Moving to...
Star Rating - 10/23/2017
Unless you want to enlist in the Navy or work in fast food, retail, or as a landscaper, there isn’t much for gainful employment. It is a terribly boring place for a kid to live! It's boring for adults as well, since there is little to do here. Many commercial buildings are empty and are eyesores. There are tornadoes, hurricanes and torrential rains and high humidity most of the year. The schools really aren’t good at all, which you really notice if you have lived somewhere where the schools actually are good. The restaurants are quite terrible. Homes are overpriced for what you get. I’d say there are many far, far better places to live.

As someone who moved to the historic district of St. Marys two years ago, I can offer a different perspective. Yes, the town needs to continue developing the area near the waterfront. (It’s still recovering from damage by hurricane Irma.) But many positive things are happening as more people discover one of the last places on the east coast that still offers a quiet and affordable lifestyle. We previously owned a beach house on St. Simons Island, but that place is now overdeveloped and overpriced with heavy traffic on all the roads. St. Marys is a quiet, safe, friendly town convenient to larger places for shopping and dining, including Amelia Island, Jacksonville, and Brunswick. It also has some very good restaurants of its own.

I must say the move from 40 years in Metro Atlanta to St Marys has been a breath of fresh air. I would gladly trade the traffic, the noise, the attitudes, the over crowded schools of metro Atlanta for the quiet, "boring" life in St Marys. When we were house hunting after my job relocated me to Jacksonville, as soon as we found historic downtown, we knew this is where we needed to be. We have more golf carts drive by the house than cars. the view of Cumberland Island is amazing. The sunrise over the ocean is breathtaking. We have the greatest neighbors. I can't say enough good things about downtown St Marys. I WILL NEVER MOVE BACK TO ATLANTA after experiencing St Marys.
