Review of Redding, California

Don't move here!
Star Rating - 3/16/2021
I retired to Redding 6 years ago and I can truthfully say that I made a huge mistake. If you are looking to move to an area that has; thriving arts scene, gourmet dining, cultural diversity, an enlightened forward thinking community, politicians that are a credit to their community, DO NOT move to Redding. Redding is an ultra-conservative community with virtually zero cultural diversity. The city of Redding is filled with boarded up businesses, homeless everywhere, open drug dealing, one of the highest rates of car theft in Calif. Redding has 1 bookstore....Barnes & Nobel, 1 wine shop...BevMo, no art galleries downtown & very little thriving retail. A city of 100,000 people and 1 bookstore should tell you volumes about the intelec of this community. The Congressman that represents this area voted to overturn our Presidental election, is a science denier, supports QAnon insanity & has refuse repeatedly to denounce White Supremacy. Redding is in the grip of Bethel Church....an organization that promotes gay conversion with prayer and resurecting the dead. Bethel has permeated our city & county gov't. They are powerful and a curse on this part of Calif. Our local , City& County, politicians continually talk about " protecting our Second Amendment Rights.....while refusing to wear masks and ignoring the multitude of problems in our community. This is Trump country & damn proud of it! Disgusting!

THANK you for the heads up! I was looking to retire around there because I see the house prices are low and thought it was just because of the fire damage and danger. It now sounds like a total nightmare in every aspect. I know there are conservative (radical right wing) communities around, but I was just checking to see how bad the crime rate is there. I didn't know everything was as bad as all that, and indeed it's all that is wrong with America today for sure. I see some glowing reviews from others who tout "growth" etc, but cancer grows too so that's not saying anything good. I'm sure now where they're coming from and I'm not going there. I am glad to stay as far away as possible now and I hope "Trump country" eventually implodes on itself.

Yes , sounds like a great place to live especially if all the lunatic Fruitloop liberals have cleared out. Maybe you should head up north here to Portland, antifa and black lives matter will welcome you. You are an upper crusty butt elite type, why did you try to save a buck and move to Gods country?Bet the crime rate isn’t as high as the really cool progressive towns don’t you think.

I lived in the Redding area from 1981 to 2001. The above review is accurate, pretty much spot on. I have friends and relatives there and they all talk about the homeless situation. It's worse than ever. I'm close to retirement and was going to move back after retiring. My last visit to Redding changed my mind on moving back. One thing not mentioned in the review is the cost of housing. In the mid 90s I was renting a absolutely beautiful 4 bed rm home in a wonderful neighbourhood for 750 a month. And that was concidered high back then. Now you will pay close to Southern California rates. And that's if you can find something at all. Oh fires, forest fires! Seems a summer can't go by without a fire. Smoke gets trapped in the valley and can stick around for weeks, sometimes over a month. It used to be an amazing place.

You obviously did not do much research prior to retiring there. None of these issues are hidden and many are not unique to Redding

Take a hike. No one will miss you. I can't believe you moved here without visiting first. California has been going in the wrong direction for a long time, from my point of view - not yours, but you moved here thinking you could save a buck on housing. Shame on you. You can blame Amazon for there being no bookstores. There a many fine shops in Redding and people remember your face. You don't get that in Palo Alto, Cupertino, Atherton etc... where you can find your nice wine, vinegar, art shops etc... The real science deniers are in the CDC these days. If you believe them you're a fool, sad to say. Government has definitely been letting us down lately. I know many Bethel students and congregants. They are fine, law abiding people who pay their rent on time and are good citizens. Yes this is Trump country thank God. No politician is perfect but he's hands down superior to uncle Joe and the cons to put him in the oval office. I don't fault the voters because, the truth is, Trump won in a landslide.

You don’t mention the beautiful walking and biking trails, the mountains, rivers, lakes, the wildlife, and just the beauty of the area. Have you heard of Amazon for ordering books? We do have internet here in case you don’t know. It sounds like your only form of entertainment is eating out at restaurants which means you just stay inside like a couch potato. It probably doesn’t matter where you live, and maybe you should move away.
