I've met many people who moved here to Rocky Mount from DC and some claim it's worse here as far as crime and safety and others claim DC is worse. All I can say is I've lived here all my life and have seen how bad and how dangerous it is having witnessed 6 drive bys myself seeing the first at the age of 8 which in turn was the first murder I'd seen. Rocky Mount was at one also included in an article about the top 50 most dangerous cities to live in and another for being listed in the top 50 worse cities to raise children. Lol I know that was a lot to read but it's certainly something to be considered when thinking about moving here.
