Review of Port Charlotte, Florida

YUK!!!!
Star Rating - 8/20/2012
I have lived in Florida for 27 years and I grow to detest it more and more every year. Let's start with the weather first...It's ALWAYS hot here. You WILL NOT get the 4 season effect here. Many of you are probably thinking "hmm, I could deal with tropical paradise weather year round" but when it's Thanksgiving and Christmas and your siting around with the AC cranking and it's to hot to put up your tree or to cook a nice holiday meal for your family, you will think twice about it. Maybe if your as sick of snow as I am of constant hot weather, this place would be for you. Next...raising a culturally well rounded child here is really hard as there is little to no culture. Museums and good theaters are sparse and there is really nothing to do in most areas unless your visiting Orlando (home of Mickey Mouse) or going to the beach, which gets really old really fast. Actually, come to think of it, Florida has some of the most polluted beaches in the country...right up there with New Jersey beaches (Google it if you don't believe me!!), so I wouldn't want to get in the water here anymore anyhow. And let's not forget about the cost of living, which is ridiculously high and the fact that there are no jobs for any of the locals (probably explains why the crime rate is so high!). The only people who can actually live comfortably here are northerners who work up north for 20-30 years and then come down here and live off their pensions (which by the way is part of what screws up our economy here!!!). If I had it my way, it would be NO NORTHERNERS ALLOWED!! They mess up the cost of living, cause traffic jams, create long lines, take our Dr appts and Hair appts from locals in the winter and are in general, just a giant pain-in -the-you-know-what. If living in a state infested with snakes, mosquitoes, lizards, palmetto bugs, hot humid weather and old people sounds fun to you, then this is the place for you. I'd trade places with someone who lives ANYWHERE else in a flat second.

@ yuk.. I've been here 20 yrs & I agree with you. I moved down to Florida at the behest of a friend (we no longer speak to each other) & retired early & I believed the B.S of how cheap Florida is. I forgot she had a triple income. However, even for one person the pension & social security doesn't go far & hard to get a job when you're over 70. Every 2 years I move to another county hoping to escape the snowbirds who leave their driving skills up north & the manners there too that's providing that had any of either. Wish I could go home because Florida will never be my home only a place where I live & many feel that way. The apartment communities here in Florida are a bunch of thieves & liars & not sure how they all sleep at night raking tenants over the coals. @james sorry the truth hurts..

OMG I appreciate Florida, you have no clue how lucky you are but maybe your a miserable person. It doesn't matter who comes down for the winter, snowbirds, I call myself a sun follower. We were lucky to retire in our 50s and our children are grown and married. Do you think we were going to move to Florida if all you said were true? Well honey what you're saying is coming out of your rear. .... Florida especially Port Charlotte had gorgeous weather in the winter, Love the beaches and the politeness of the locals. You live in New Haven for 50 yrs you'll appreciate everything life has to offer. I have one thing to say, I am a northeastern but i want to say thank you to the locals of Port Charlotte for being the most polite and respectable people I ever met. Florida livingis ALOT then where I lived, gas, home taxes, sale taxes, insurance for vehicle and home, You don't pay CAR TAXES here that's HUGE especial when you have two vehicles. One more PENSIONS you don't taxes us. GOD BLESS FLORIDA.

You should try living in the Boston, Mass area. There are many excellent restaurants, museums, parks, shopping and the train system connects all of the neighborhoods. Bugs are all dead by the end of November and there are four very distinct seasons each year.
