Review of Duncan, Oklahoma

Duncan is what you make it!
Star Rating - 11/24/2017
Small towns can be limiting on things to do, but if you look, you can find it. Lawton and OKC, which is not very far, offers more places to eat, shop, and concerts. Duncan has the Simmons Center, which is a state of the art facility for a town of this size. I've lived a few other places and never seen anything this nice! (It offers basketball, racket ball, swimming, exercise classes, a workout gym, and concert venues) The three main places Duncan has to employ people are the school system, the hospital, and Halliburton. The Family Dollar does have a distribution center that employs a few 100 (I think, correct me if I'm wrong on the # of employees). Yes, the pay could be better elsewhere, but probably the cost of living and crime rate is higher. I believe drugs are bad here, but I believe they are bad everywhere right now. There is Duncan Little Theater, Hogsdon Studio (for young children/teens) if you like to act. We do have the Dehydrator, which is a summer bike race that a lot of people come from all over the world to participate in. We have a state of the art museum called "The Chisholm Trail Museum that has a nominal fee, but has a general store with hands-on activities and a sensory movie about the history of the old Chisholm Trail. Teen pregnancy is a problem in Stephen's County, but recently a new place has opened called The Charis Pregnancy Center, which gives girls/teens more options when making the important decisions regarding their baby. There are a lot of churches to choose from, which is a good thing, right? I know of two pastors that minister at the Stephen's County jail, and when these inmates get out, if they truly want to change their lives, they offer counseling, and transportation via a bus to get to church. Downtown shopping is great. Two of my favorite stores are LaVanna's (women clothing) and Ecclectic Echo (antiques)! I don't see Duncan as trashy or full of trashy people. I'm sorry that Mandy you have had that experience. Not all of us are old, trashy, and uneducated. I'm a teacher with a Masters and hope you can find a place that better suits you. I'm sure Duncan is not for everybody. I hope you find what you're looking for......

Well said Ginger. I live in a small town 35 miles north of Tucson. My wife and I moved there in '90. Small towns aren't for everybody. It helps to be married. Happily married I would have to add. Because if you move to a small town to help solve some of your marital problems, well, I just think it will only make things worse. If I were single and young, I sure wouldn't want a small town. Thanks to the internet there is so much information you can receive about just about anywhere in the world. Sperlings Best Places is a probably the best site to find out all kinds of stuff about any town or city. From how many Democrats vs. Republicans to how many sunny days a year. City data is another good one. But unlike Sperlings which is just the facts Mam, City Data is purely subjective viewpoints. I just think you really need to do your own due diligence before moving to a place. With unemployment at over 10% right now in Duncan, it is a real buyers market for real estate. Problem with a buyers market the real estate agents don't tell you is that conversely if and when you plan to sell it very well might still be a buyers market. With the unemployment rate so high one would want to have a promise of a job waiting in Duncan before moving here.
