Review of Torrance, California

Great neighborhood in the South Bay of SoCal
Star Rating - 9/1/2020
I have lived in Torrance for 19 years. I was fortunate enough to move here before housing prices skyrocketed in the early 2000's. I live in the middle of Torrance and as of this review (2020) it is challenging to purchase a small 3 bedroom home for less than $800,000.

The upsides of this city:
- safe neighborhoods
- distinguished schools
- very close to excellent beaches
- great year round weather
- huge variety of dining options
- near by excellent entertainment options (sports, music, amusement parks, etc.)
- great shopping options
- a vast array of employment opportunities
- nearby excellent universities
- excellent health care options

To me the cons are as follows:
- Very high cost of living (especially home prices)
- Traffic within the city and every single nearby major boulevard and freeway
- Increasing population density for Torrance (and most of SoCal)
- Claustrophobia due to the traffic and population density

If you are fortunate enough to be able to work from home while being able to afford the high cost of living, the central SoCal location of Torrance is perfect. But for many of us the reality is a major daily commutes of 2 to 4 hours to and from work during the week. That week of long commutes makes you reluctant to experience it during the weekend because there is still major traffic all day Saturday and Sunday. Claustrophobia may settle in because you just do not want to hassle the traffic. Unfortunately, you can miss out on the huge variety of experiences the Greater Los Angeles area has to offer.

I retired from TRW Aerospace and my drive to and from work was about 10 to 20 minutes. Initially I drove north to the valley where a one way trip could be 45 minutes to 3 hours depending on weather, accidents and road construction.

Moved to Torrance May 1980. Two major and two smaller additions through the years (house is now paid for). Other than housing the Torrance cost of living was cheaper than Illinois and New York where we previously lived and owned homes.

Average commute on the major highways around town is 5 min a mile. I can find side streets sometime to get around but mostly your stuck on the thru fairs
