Review of Puyallup, Washington

Not what I expected- It could be worse I guess...

I just moved here from Colorado due to my job and it's definitely not what I had hoped for. It doesn't seem like a completely horrible place to live like Tacoma or other big cities, but it has been a culture shock for me. I'm used to wide open spaces, challenging mountain trails, abundant wildlife, clean air, organic food, book stores, and locally owned businesses. Puyallup really doesn't offer anything like that.

The only restaurants I'm finding are chain restaurants and fast food restaurants so I just make everything by scratch. There are a couple of local ones, but you have to really search. I also can't find organic hand made artisan bread anywhere. The bakeries only serve cupcakes and the bread I do find still has a few preservatives thrown in. The closest grocery store that offers organic selections are in Olympia and Tacoma. People also don't really seem to take care of their health here nor do they exercise.

Besides food options, if you like to physical activity such as hiking and backpacking, this is not the place for you. The only trail that I found besides the trails at Mt. Rainier are only 5 miles long and it's not challenging. There are sewer drains, trash, and hobos in the parks/trails and I do not feel safe. You have to drive at least an hour to find anything mediocre.

The overall atmosphere feels depressing and dangerous to me. I refuse to walk outside alone. On most nights, we have at least a few cop cars fly past our residence or someone screaming down the road. There is no wildlife and I don't have birds visit my feeder anymore. All I hear is the constant roar of traffic and engines. If you open the windows you just smell exhaust. Also the traffic is horrendous and it will take you forever to go anywhere. Also, there is trash and litter everywhere. I've never seen anything like it. It lines the highways and I'm constantly picking up trash that I see in parks when I do go. I don't know why others don't seem to notice. I guess they're just used to it and don't know how different it is in other places. It's not the classiest of places. My husband and I make it a point to leave this place every weekend and spend it elsewhere. We're both counting down the days until we are able to leave and never look back.

The only plus to Puyallup is it's location to everything else. Otherwise, if I could leave now I would.

That's South Hill though, downtown, actual Puyallup is quite a bit different. Still has gone downhill in recent years, but nicer than South Hill, that's why it's more expensive too. The litter and trash has gotten really really bad the past few years, it's disgusting. I've lived in Puyallup my whole life and it's sad to see it get like this.

Hi everyone! I just moved to the Summit area just west of Puyallup and I love it! I think you may need to just look a little bit outside of the major areas of South Hill and you'll find living is much more relaxed and more neighborly. I've been selling real estate out here about 15 years and most people I know find they can get to Tacoma for all of their specialty breads and foods, while staying out of the metropolis for their living situation.

I agree, and this is my experience, I am not looking for anyone to agree or disagree with my experience this is just what happens here. With that said I have been here a little over 2 years. I have experienced 24/7 drug deals, drug use, drunk and drugged driving in my neighborhood, assaults, naked people, people climbing over my fence using my yard as a toilet and to try and break into the house. Breaking the screen door 3 times. I finally screwed them shut. Call the police/sheriff you say I have and nothing ever happens besides people being asked to move along, I even had video of a few of the people that tried to break in, law enforcement wanted nothing to do with seeing or using the video, let alone take a report, the people that are asked to leave only return 15 minutes later and it continues. When I call these issues in I am then retaliated against with more from the criminal element. Cars playing music so loud it shakes the house, peeling out, honking, and intentionally setting off car alarms, & high beaming the house, m-80’s set off year round, again 24/7. I am followed everywhere by people living in the neighborhood and criminal element. People have tried driving me off the road, they try ramming my car from behind, flipping me off and driving next to me crossing the line to intimidate me. I am a gay person with only a rainbow Flag flying in my back yard I keep to myself and I haven’t felt safe her since I moved here. This is not a safe place for people of color or LGBTQ, or if you trying to clean up the neighborhood you are in the wrong place. if you are not white and right you do not belong and they will let you know. I will not be bullied out of my home and will continue to do the right thing, regardless of the bullying or intimidation until...

I grew up in Puyallup. I have lived here 50+ years. Your comments hit the nail on the head. Everything you wrote is correct. It was nice in the seventies.
