Review of Floyd, Virginia

Where tie-dye and coveralls live in harmony
Star Rating - 8/16/2009
Floyd County culture is a delightful mix of country folk and the creative wave of hippie culture that joined it in the 60's and just kept growing. Floyd is experiencing a Renaissance of creative culture with an ever increasing artisan/musician population. It's been estimated that Floyd County has the highest amount of creative talent per capita in the state of Virginia, with a possible 1 in 10 to 1 in 6 people being musicians, artists, potters, etc.

Friday Night in the town of Floyd is hopping! With only one red light, but over 12 art galleries and 7 live music venues (and on Friday Night there's musicians playing all through the streets!) Floyd Country Store is the center of the old tyme and bluegrass music, but you're just as likely to find a Celtic trio playing on the benches in town or a string quartet. The Jacksonville Center is the artistic hub of Floyd County, with classes in glass blowing, blacksmithing, painting, jewelry making, and pottery. The newly renovated Station is exploding with creative art studios; paintings, papermaking, handcrafted lamps, pottery and stunning handmade furniture. It's a wonderful place to visit and (if you love creativity) to move to.

Floyd is a interesting mix for sure but in my opinion having lived in Floyd County and operated a B&B there it is very clickish. The locals are a pretty tight knit bunch and the artisan crowd being the same. Very clean air and water and extremely safe crime wise. Fond memories but as elsewhere no place is perfect and major shopping is 35-60 miles away in Christiansburg or Roanoke.

Sounds interesting and certainly creative on an individual, self seeking mastery of an art. But, hardly very productive! I'm looking for a comunity which puts it's efforts in creating things needed to survive, to eat, to plant etc. When I reach the point of having these things, then I'll try jewelry making and art. Oh! BTW, how do the people relate to each other?
