Not a good place
Star Rating - 10/29/2017
After retiring with a nice pension but in a place that is one of the most expensive in the nation I unfortunately discovered Galax VA. Admittedly housing and taxes are cheap here. BUT, living in a new place is not all housing and taxes. The people here are not friendly. Nearby is a nationally famous VFW. As a vet. I went to a couple of their meetings and events. No one spoke to me. No one even greeted me. As a life time unionist the name of the city park really burns my buns, Felts Park. The Felts were not friends of unionists. In fact they were well know thugs that that would do anything anyone told them to do if they were paid... throw a widon out of her home the day after her husband died in a mining accident... No problem. The Roanoke newspaper has a good article about them. Had a guy approach me an a lady I was talking to in Wallyworld. Both of us were wearing Union clothing. Me a T Shirt and her a jacket. He told the two of us his "Daddy" used to say that when he saw a union member he was looking at a "good for nuthin', lazy, S.O.B (but he used the full words)". I wanted to hit him but didn't. I talked to the manager and he said he had a right to express his opinion. REALLY? Be ready for insults about your accent if you aren't a hillbilly. Countless times I've been told, "You don't sound like you're from around here." Meaning you aren't welcome. Or, "You talk funny! Why don't you go somewhere people talk funny like you do and leave us alone." And my favorite: I was walking into a store and the guy beside me looked over and nodded. I thought he was being friendly so I said, "Hello, how are you?" His reply: (loudly) "Did I say it was okay to talk to me?" And this has happened more than once. Think you're tough? Buy a home in Galax. Figure on keeping it forever because you'll never be able to sell it and pay the fees. But try the place out... After a year or two you'll be ready and able to handle Hell. If I could sell my place for the mortgage plus $15K... I'd evacuate in an hour! Hate the place.

We have had the opposite experience. We moved here from Ohio and love it. We find the people very friendly and kind. In fact, we do a lot of walking and had to get used to waving at every car the passed. They often wave even when two cars are driving past one another car on a side road. We forget when we leave Galax, and whenever we say hello to someone or wave we never get a response and have to remind ourselves " we're not in Galax anymore". The weather is much nicer and the mountains are beautiful. We feel safe here. It isn't fair to blame an area for someone that lived here or something that happened 100 years ago. Good luck trying to find a place where everyone has the same and shares like political views as yourself regardless of what they are. We have gotten the comment that we don't sound like we are from here but it is because they want to start a conversation and are ALWAYS friendly.
