Ukiah not for most people
Star Rating - 5/13/2021
I am a transplant from Los Angeles/OC and have lived here for 6 years. Thankfully I do not live in the city of Ukiah. I live in the east hills and am in my 40s trying to raise my child. Ukiah is not for most people. I've read each of these reviews and all of them have pieces of accuracy in their criticism. Nothing to do for kids. Very few parks. But beautiful hiking. No bowling, mini golf or fun centers. Schools are not great. The middle school in particular is awful. Few neighborhoods to feel safe just riding a bike outside. And yes. Cannabis and homelessness/mentally ill population issues dominate the city and county government landscape to a degree intolerable for most. This is the county seat for public services and there's no shortage of those looking to just live off of handouts. Homeless encampments popping up then being torn down is now a constant battle within the city and the area around it. It hurts local businesses when the parking lots and doorways are occupied or polluted. HOWEVER, the agricultural community here is amazing. All hard workers with generations behind them building up and establishing this beautiful valley along the Russian River. Agriculture (beyond cannabis) is a HUGE contributor to the local economy and probably doesn't get the credit it deserves. Timber, pears, grapes, ranches of hay and livestock among other things farming are all well represented here and these folks take well-deserved pride in what they do. Also, there are plenty of medical professionals who came here to serve rural America and continue to fight an uphill battle sacrificing the comforts and luxuries of bigger cities to serve. So lets make sure we acknowledge their contributions as well. Ukiah lacks an identity appealing to most and will limp along this way for many years to come. The potential for greatness does exist here, but too many parties sucking it dry and government unable to find its way.

Ukiah needs to get its collective head out of the sand. It needs to find a better way to fund improvements other than just “grant” money. Ukiah is so dependent on grants that it now permanently overlooks being self sufficient, and just relies on others for money. There are quite a number of “professionals” at writing grant proposals and requesting grant money in Ukiah. They’ve gotten really good at it. Please, give us money. Money, money, and more money. We need money for this. We need money for that. This is just like the homeless depending on others to feed, house, and provide them free drug needles. It’s a place of far more takers depending on the generosity of a few givers. And the givers are always the same names. We took our name from the list. It needs to stop being Disneyland for the homeless. They might as well have a billboard up on the 101 advertising the benefits given to the homeless, with a free bus pass and map of Ukiah. Millions of dollars were just spent on reviving State Street with a “beautification project”. But, this will not bring in tourists. OK, so now you have a nice looking street with homeless encampments everywhere, and vagrants defecating on brand new asphalt. Ukiah needs to get its priorities straight, and in my estimation, it will never happen. The Board of Supervisors are all near-sighted, except for maybe one of them, and they believe that growing and more pot will somehow be the great Savior. Well, the sheriff says that his deputies are outgunned and places like Covelo are now ruled by drug lords. Also, more pot farms lead to more water usage, and water is something that Ukiah simply does not have in abundance, at this point. Wells will run dry. Have you seen Lake Mendocino recently? It’s more like Mendocino basin. More pot equals less water and more crime. Plain and simple. Allow me to make one simple observation. Go take a look at the Palace Hotel in the center of town. It’s just a crumbling decaying structure that was a rat sanctuary when we lived there. We almost made the huge mistake of buying a property located close to the Hotel. That is, until we had the property inspected. All of the wiring in the property was destroyed and chewed up, by rats. In the closet, and attic and throughout the property was rat poop. And the rats all lived in the hotel. And this hotel has been in this condition FOR DECADES!!!! And what gets done about it? Nothing. It is a crumbling decaying property just as the town is a crumbling decaying town. And, just as the previous reviewer states, the schools are horrific. The kids can barely spell their own names, and can’t even write them. The illiteracy rate in the new generation of kids is simply far too high. How do any of the parents expect their children to prosper, or go to college, or make a living if they cannot even spell? Ukiah is an aging town with a high percentage of seniors. But, they treat seniors like cockroaches. We were members of the Senior Center, so we know about this first hand. Let me tell you what the town officials really care about. Money and job security. That’s it. That’s all. The salaries are obscene. These officials are not working at the White House, or the Senate. They work, and I use the word “work” loosely, they work in a dinky little town and can’t see past their own noses. Ask anyone this one simple question. Year after year after year, has Ukiah gotten better or worse? Even if the person that you ask enjoys living there, although I cannot imagine this, they will still tell you that it used to be better. This equates to, “it is getting worse”. Much worse. Just look at the “crime” statistics vs the state. Look at the “rape” statistics compared to the state. Look at the “victim of a violent crime” stats compared to the state. Look at the “victim of property damage” compared to the state. It’s all right there to see online, so go look!!!! The previous reviewer states, “Ukiah not for most people”. Man, you ain’t just whistling Dixie on that one. Ukiah isn’t for most people because most people would not tolerate living in these conditions. Most people are smarter than this, and if they aren’t smart, then they are the ones that stick around and do nothing to improve the town, or they run for office and a cushy government position. My suggestion would be to make sure to read all of the reviews of Ukiah before you even consider going or moving there, and save yourself and your family a mountain of headaches. DON’T DO IT! And, if you may read this, and it upsets you, then,…PRINT OUT A COPY OF ALL OF THE REVIEWS ONLINE THAT TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT UKIAH AND MAIL THEM TO ALL OF THE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OR THE CITY COUNCIL, AND DEMAND A RESPONSE!!!! Or just don’t go there in the first place, and if you live there, …. maybe consider moving. You are not alone in this thought.

I do not see one single positive "comment" from one single person that disagrees with all of the negative online comments, and there appears to be quite an abundance of those that have huge distain for the place, and with ample reason. Why? Because there is nothing good to say, and they are all too embarrassed to say anything anyway. Besides, just clicking a button is so easy and within most Ukiahian's skill set. The "Disagree" button should really be re-labeled as an, .... "I wish that it wasn't true, but it is" button. So, let's hear it. Name one thing, one single solitary thing that is good in, or about Ukiah besides good pot and plenty of access to it. The bad things could be listed easily but it could take weeks, maybe months, to compile such a huge list. People should know the truth about Ukiah, and the truth not only hurts, .... "They can't handle the truth"!!!!!!! Obviously. Ukiah just plain sucks!!!
