Review of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

A great place to live - a detailed review
Star Rating - 12/16/2020
Having lived in Pittsburgh for over 30 years, I think I can give a pretty detailed summary of what it's like here. As with any place, there are positives and negatives, but overall this is a great place to live. Let me start with the negatives though, since it's a shorter list. The weather sucks in winter, it's cloudy, and cold, but we don't typically get a lot of snow. An occasional blizzard, yes, but the last time that happened was 10 years ago. Typically it's just 2 or 3 inches of snow a few times a year and that's it. But it is cloudy and dreary almost every day from December to March. Roads are typically in rough shape, lots of potholes. This is an old, industrial city. If you're looking for shiny new neighborhoods and shopping centers you won't find many here. On the positive side of things: summers are wonderful, warm but not oppressive, and lacking the high humidity of the south. Many days are sunny and warm and many evenings, even in July, can be cool. You can actually open your windows and get fresh air at night quite often in summer, if you want a break from the a/c. Real estate is extremely reasonable here and you can find a very nice house for $150-$200k in all but the most exclusive neighborhoods. The cost of living in general is low compared to the U.S. We have plenty of museums, a nice zoo, and a beautiful walkable downtown. From Mt. Washington you get an amazing view of the city white eating at some of the cities best restaurants. We have a fantastic public library system and a very good public transportation system with buses that cover almost all areas of the city and suburbs and a light rail system as well. We have 3 major sports teams AND you can actually go to a baseball game in the most beautiful park in the country for $25 bucks or less. Lately Pittsburgh has earned (rightly so) a reputation for foodies, we have some wonderful and diverse restaurants. We have world class colleges and universities, with Carnegie Mellon and University of Pittsburgh leading the pack, but by no means the only options in town. Duquesne University is here, Point State Park, Robert Morris. Our health care system is one of the best in the country. We have a strong and growing tech job market; Google has a presence here, for example. Traffic is not nearly as bad as most cities of this size and there are typically at least 3 different ways to get from point A to point B relatively easily. People here are friendly, approachable, and helpful. Shopping is plentiful with 5 or 6 really great shopping areas you can choose from. Oh one last negative I did want to mention. Although Pittsburgh is nothing like the steel town of 50 years ago, with dark skies, soot filled air and belching smoke stacks... we do still have pretty poor air quality overall here. It's 98% better than it was even just 40 years ago, but it's still poor compared to most places in the country. It's unfortunate but it's the truth.

In summary, I would give Pittsburgh 4 1/2 stars but that is not an option to I gave it 5. It's just a great place to live - period. Not perfect, but great.

I'm looking at moving from my native city of St. Louis, Missouri and Pittsburgh sounds great! Your negatives are nothing compared to St. Louis. Winter here is just as dreary, it rains constantly in the spring and the pollen is so thick you can't get out and enjoy the warmer weather before the long sweltering summer kicks in. St. Louis is one of the most violent and segregated cities in the country with a crime rate over twice that of Pittsburgh. You may see me in Pittsburgh next year!

We have lost a few local malls but we still have the shopping in Robinson and their mall, South Hills Mall, Water Front shopping and Cranberry also has a large shipping area. And to expand on the previous review, I have lived in the suburbs now for nearly 40 years and it is an excellent place to raise children. There is so much to do and see here. There are many parks and recreational areas near and in the city with huge county park system. You have many different bodies of water for water recreation. We get many of the productions companies from New York along with local theater productions. We have the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Ballet Theatre, the National Aviary, Phipps Conservatory and to mention just a few of the museums Heinz, Andy Warhol, Carnegie, The Science Museum and the Children's museum. As for the air pollution the monitors that were placed by the EPA are strategically near the few places that still manufacture or have the heaviest traffic so although our air is not the greatest in many places it is not as bad as the ratings say. Also if you come here you will find we are a mix of the mid-west friendly atmosphere and some of the east coast competitiveness. We don't like to lose!

No one who's lived in an area for decades has the comparisons of other places in which to make a valid observation. Pittsburgh, PA, and most of the Northeast is dreary, ugly, cold, and cloudy most of the time. The obesity rate is off the charts b/c the weather is so sucky people sit inside on their sofa. I couldn't wait to leave that area. The Southwest, West, and even the South has a MUCH higher quality of life. People go outside and ENJOY life and the great weather and incredible nature parks/trails it has to offer. Oh, and people in PA don't seem to realize (or care?) that the property "school" taxes are so completely off the charts high and outrageous! My old $150000 duplex cost $3500 in yearly taxes!! And what do they get for their payment? Horrendous weather, not many nice parks or amenities to enjoy,, all in a year round dreary, ugly climate. ( For comparison, in AZ I pay $1000 a year taxes for a much more expensive home, and have access to great modern roads ( no awful concrete borderwalls), So many beautiful hiking trails and parks I cant even name them all just in a 5 mile radius, and every modern amenity imaginable. All in one of the top most beautiful states in the country. P.S. Don't work Pennsylvanians, you can HAVE your horrid garbage state. I'll stay here in paradise.
