Poverty with a view
Star Rating - 2/23/2018
I've lived here 10 years. In 2008 when I moved here a 2 bedroom apartment was 595. That same apartment is now 1,400 dollars. The cost of living is through the roof and housing is hard to come by. Wait lists on apartments are up to 3 YEARS. While there are jobs, keep in mind most pay 11-13 dollars an hour and when you are paying over a thousand for a studio apartment you simple can't make it. This place is becoming Aspen. Grocery, Rent, Utilities in winter are all costly. The housing market and rental companies require large if not massive deposits to move in and require you make 3 times the rent. So keep in mind renting a 2 bedroom apartment runs you 2,700 dollars you would have to make over 7 grand to qualify. Deposits on most places are 1,200 and up. It is cold in winter with ice and snow and a lot of the roads away from downtown are pot hole messes. The health care is poor as is the hospital and is over full and you will be sent away quickly. Also, if you do not have health insurance, just go home and die cause St. Charles the only hospital in town will do very little to nothing to help you. Money talks in this town. If you are rich and have money, power and all the perks then you will love it here. If you are the working class, you will suffer and live in poverty. Crime is growing and there are lots of homeless here. To give you an idea, there are apartments in town that rent for 6,500 dollars a MONTH. Anything related to downtown or the west side of Bend is high end living. Expect to pay over 3 thousand dollars for a 1 bedroom dump anywhere west of Colorado avenue and Newport (west side of Bend) Move here if you have money and like to spend it or if you plan on living with 8 people in an apartment. Also, buying a home, the prices are twice the average with half a million dollar homes in need of repair selling like hotcakes.

I can only ask, that since 2008 what have YOU personally done to increase your value and skills to the marketplace? Folks you cannot move to one of the most beautiful places in the country and not expect this to happen, and you cannot expect to do average jobs for average pay in a well-above average place.

Vance, you just highlighted the biggest challenge of living in Bend. Most opportunities are average jobs for average pay. It doesn't do anyone any good to increase their value and skills in a marketplace that is limited. Let's look at real estate agents. Over 2,000 are licensed. They aren't all active, but most real estate agents don't make a living wage. I know enough to know this for a fact. And you have people moving here because they are planning to increase their value and skills to be a successful real estate agent. Well, the problem I'm sure you are aware of is low inventory. But this is a great illustration of how it is in Bend. Obviously, you are one of the fortunate few.
