Review of Lynchburg, Virginia

Charming But Intolerant
Star Rating - 3/17/2020
There is much that I like about Lynchburg. The scenery is pretty, lots of historic architecture, well mannered Southerners. But, it is dominated by Jerry Falwell's Liberty University with 13,000 very conservative students, faculty and administration. This makes for a pretty intolerant atmosphere. Do not consider moving here if you're gay.

You clearly do not know this city. To begin with, the town is not dominated by Falwell or Liberty. You can't swing a cat in this town without hitting a church, so Liberty and the Thomas Road crowd are definitely in the minority. And, about those students, there is a growing number who are just as leftist and intolerant as you. As a matter of fact, The Mayor and City Council positions are held by Dems. There are a fair number of gays and lesbians in the area, and I have never heard any complaints prior to your comments.

I lived here for a couple of years and am seriously thinking of moving back to retire. Yes Lynchburg is a “Christian” town and LU does hold sway over a lot of the city, but a vast majority of the people are seriously nice. I’m atheist, and not in the closet about it. I have a FSM symbol on my car - the atheist group LASH are a bunch of great people who are fun to be with. With Falwell’s disgrace, I think there is a good chance LU will go back to being an evangelical college instead of the right wing Republican college that it turned into. I know more than a couple gay people who live here and they love it. The downtown is awesome and still affordable, the prices are going up. There are excellent wooded walking trails that you cannot believe you are in the middle of the city.
