Review of Eureka, California

Cons-- Little economic opportunity, high property crime rates, limited healthcare services, few amenities, prohibitively expensive airfares, gray skies, horrific dating scene.

Pros-- Mild climate, great outdoors destinations, friendly people, relaxed small-town vibe, no traffic.

Eureka (and Humboldt County in general) is a great place to live if you love the outdoors. Housing costs are generally affordable but not cheap compared to national averages, and are probably a bit on the high side relative to the economic opportunities available in the area.

Not a great place for retirees, low skilled laborers, single people, shopaholics, or people who love to photograph their dinner for Instagram.

However, if you can find a good job or work from home and love outdoorsy stuff, this place is hard to beat. One of the very few places in the country where you can go out and enjoy beautiful forests, beaches, lakes, and rivers and not be swamped by other people. Personally, I freaking love this place just because of that. The climate is also hard to beat. Although it's not world class like the bay area, temperatures are pretty mild with it never getting extremely hot or extremely cold. It's not windy. Some years can be very rainy with an almost constant, oppressive gray (much like the Seattle region), other years are extremely pleasant with an abundance of lovely days. There's lots of wildlife if you're into photography. Plenty of boating, hiking, swimming, fishing, hunting, hackey sack, and disc golf. Though the outdoors stuff probably isn't as nice as up in the Olympia area of Washington, I'd say Eureka and Humboldt County might be overall better due to the superior weather and lack of crowds.

All in all, I'm going with five stars because this place is right up my alley.

Spot on. I’ve lived in Eureka 15 years and Stuey’s review pretty much nails it. I would say healthcare is a mixed bag. St. Joes Hospital is good but the area is in need of more GPs. My wife and I retired here and would say it is great for seniors other than the healthcare being a bit challenging but not impossible. I had a sudden cardiac arrest and received superb treatment. Lots of senior stuff to do both on your own and through the Adorni Community Center and Humboldt State University. If you love outdoor activity this is the spot.

We moved up from the San Diego area and fell in love with the forests and wildlife. The people are very friendly. There are a lot of homeless and even where our home is in a higher priced area, there are drug needles found on the side of the road. We found the best church ever but had to try several before we found the right one. With the legalization of cannabis, the area has been hard hit even further economically. There are a lot of long timers giving up and moving out with no real prospects for good jobs. What paid $38 an hr for admin work in San Diego pays $11 to $13 here. We're moving out of the area mainly due to lack of jobs and especially good medical care. We drove 4 hours south after years of not finding a good neurologist. After months of trying to find a new one (the two here we tried BOTH retired) and another month of waiting for the appointment, the Santa Rosa doctor told us he didn't work in the area we needed...after having the medical file for a month. We also just got news that our 'clinic' doctor is moving this year as well. Sadly, we will leave the beauty of the are for better services, professionals, and medical needs. Stay if you're young, rich, and can telecommute from home.
