Review of Port Hueneme, California

Fantastic weather and a great place to live
Star Rating - 11/6/2019
Recently my wife and I were looking for a house in the Ventura area and we ended up buying a wonderful townhouse in Port Hueneme. The weather simply can't be beaten; the climate in Port Hueneme is similar to how it was in Ventura/Santa Barbara 20-25 years ago- very temperate. It rarely gets above 75 degrees all year round and we also have a pleasant ocean breeze. We live 5 minutes (driving distance) from the amazing Silverstrand Beach and we live about 5 minutes (driving distance) from Oxnard Shores which is widely considered to be the nicest area of Oxnard. Also, we have a beautiful shopping center right across the street from the Navy base which features a nice Ralph's grocery store, burger joints, Mexican food, Chinese food, Sushi, a storefront for every major wireless provider, frozen yogurt and more.

There are some rougher areas in Port Hueneme, but the golden rule is anything east of Ventura Road are the rough/high crime areas, but anything west of Ventura Road is acceptable to good. Also, if it is your thing, Port Hueneme is currently the only city in Ventura county that allows cannabis storefronts (for recreational use) and there are a handful of these shops on Channel Islands Blvd (with more being planned) locally known as the "green mile". It is for this reason alone that Port Hueneme is sometimes jokingly referred to as "Pot Hueneme". This year the Oxnard firework celebration was going to be canceled due to lack of funds, but the local cannabis dispensaries from Port Hueneme provided the funds needed to have the celebration, which was awesome.

Overall, Port Hueneme is a great city, as long as you avoid the seedier areas, and I couldn't be happier in regards to where we live since we are so close to the beach. Street sweepers keep the streets clean, there is a great shopping center across the street from the base, and the weather is some of the nicest weather in all of California.
