Review of Syoss,

Good place to get an education
Star Rating - 5/16/2008
Syosset is one of the best places for your child to get an education. The schools go above and beyond to give the students the opportunities to succeed in their student carrers. Sadly, if you want to make friends, this is not the place for you. Most of the people I have encountered are civil but very pessimistic and snobby. The rest are downright rude. Residents here have money and are not afraid to remind the service industry workers that they are second class citizens. Also, If you have a BMW or Mercedes you can drive anyway that you want.

My wife and I moved to Syosset 20 years ago. We have been fortunate to have very nice neighbors who take in our mail and cleared the snow from our sidewalks when we've been away. Syosset is an excellent location if you want to be near New York City and want a suburban lifestyle near every possible amenity. Syosset includes a broad range of housing from small ranch homes to multi-million dollar executive properties with perhaps 80% of homes forming a solid inventory of 3/4 bedroom splits in a well-groomed but densely populated community. The town includes a significant number of Asian and Jewish neighbors in a population that tends toward above average family incomes and educational attainment. We moved here primarily for the excellent schools. Our real estate taxes are high compared to many other areas of the country, but our daughter benefited greatly from the excellent support those schools afforded her. Having a commuter railroad station situated in the village minutes from our home helped me reach work in Manhattan minus the stress of driving Long Island's infamous parking lot--the Long Island Expressway. And residents take for granted being a short drive to ocean beaches and three airports. Community has one of the areas' finest libraries, a town-run park with ice skating rink and outdoor pool, and a golf course. Few locations are as conveniently situated. Syosset is near 4 major roadways and every imaginable service or shopping, including superb doctors, malls, entertainment, hospitals, and dining. For my personal tastes Nassau County is overcrowded. I don't like noisy crowds so I watch baseball games at home rather than at Citifield or Yankee Stadium. But that's me. Our dense population means we deal with packed roads, scarce parking and waiting time when dining out. Rush hour traffic in Nassau County begins before 6 AM and reverses around 3 PM and peaks with bumper-to-bumper traffic on most major roads. Compared to 30 years ago when I first worked in NYC, today there are many more solid careers in the Long Island economy that do not require commuting into the City. But if you seek a large property with space and woods between you and your neighbors be aware that land is limited and pricey. There are larger properties--mostly in the northern part of Syosset--but expect to pay over $1.5 and $2 million or more--double and triple the current median home value.
