Review of Klamath Falls, Oregon

Please advise on friendliness and safety.

I live in Montana. My husband passed away a few years ago, he was a veterinarian. We raised horses and I still do but looking to downsize. I simply cannot take the Montana winters any longer. I am thinking Oregon or Washington, but not wild about rain and high taxes. It looks to me like Klamath Falls is fairly mild and sunny much of the time and rural enough for me. It is a larger town than I am used too which would be nice for a change. However after reading all these reviews some of the comments really concern me. Mainly how friendly is the population to new comers and how safe is it to live in the outlying areas. Where I currently live in MT I have NEVER locked my doors. I am a widow, still in great physical shape but will be 70 in a few years. It is important to me to have community and a feeling of belonging.

I felt compelled to respond, as I was a veterinary technician for 20+ years, and now I am a real estate agent in the Klamath Falls area. I moved here in 2001, and have never looked back! I love it, and live outside the little town of Merrill. If you live outside of town, you don’t get the convenience of pizza delivery or a grocery store within minutes- but isn’t that why one chooses to live outside of town? Also, like all cities, there are some areas that are less desirable than others... but not compared to many places. I have no idea what people are talking about regarding air quality... unless there is a wild fire in the summer... just like any what else! You will see the sun every day, and the people are friendly. Feel free to contact me...I’m happy to tell you more (both good and bad!) Ashley M Fisher Nicholson Realty

6 years ago before people from the California bay area and Sacramento area started moving here in droves I would have said very friendly but not so much anymore. You should also know the medical care here is fair at best. There is also a high tax burden while government services are minimal. Most of the money goes to pet projects. Klamath county is conservative but the state is run by liberals.

I moved here 20 years ago with a young daughter. Its not easy living rural alone, especially when you're not familiar with people. If you break down, you must have roadside service. Being newly widowed you will want to make new friends, and join people doing activities you enjoy. I have met people of all walks of life in Klamath county, some friendly and some not so friendly. But there are tough independent types living here, and they have jobs, families and property to keep up and attend to. And, family is #1 when they have down time. If you already have a friend(s) living somewhere, that is where I would move, where you have someone you can depend upon when you need them. Being new to being alone is hard enough, let alone figuring out how to manage all what your other half use to do for you, that you now have to do yourself.
