Review of Albany, Missouri

Super Community, Low Cost of Living, Peaceful Livi
Star Rating - 10/19/2009
Background: The city of Albany.........this is the area of the United States that meets all of my qualifications for an ideal retirement home. I have lived and traveled all over the United States from Iowa, Alabama, Mississippi, New York City Area, and Los Angeles ( I relocate with my job and have spent 2 to 18 years at each location). My sister and brother along with many nieces and nephews live within 7 miles of Albany and I visit them at least three times a year and have for the last 15 years. (I have to say that this is one of the reasons I will be retiring there. By no means the only reason).

What this town provides: Very quaint living at a low cost. No high end entertainment as some might desire. They have a Website, check it out. These are people that are living as some would consider, in a very poor area of the country. Income is low and jobs are few, there is a hospital and air conditioning factory. It does have the following, post office, grocery store, doctor offices, gas stations, several fast food places (Stewart's...has good food...something equivalent to a hamburger joint), Subway, etc. The have a hospital, library, many old folk homes, several banks, high school, grade school, daycare, hospital, golf course, several churches, industrial air conditioning factory, and more. There are football games, basketball games. Not that far from large towns such as Bethany (Walmart there)! Maryville (Walmart there, along with a good college, and manufacturing, quite a large town with a lot to do, plenty of entertainment there). There is also a small lake outside of Maryville in which to go fishing, camping, etc.

The largest percentage of the population is white and so am I am, however I have not seen any racisim......this may be because I have been a visitor and have not met a lot of people there. Everybody does know everybody and seems to be a very church going, God loving community that helps people when in trouble.

You can relax, have a garden, have as many acres of land as you desire, do some farming, raise some animals, go hunting, ride snowmobiles. Traffic jams may be considered as having a car behind you and meeting one on the highway. This is the place I'm looking for and believe me I have considered all options. I love the changing of the seasons, the dampness of snow (yes, even the shoveling), the wetness and smell of spring with all the buds forming and daffodils blooming, the mild summers (it does get hot) with gardening, and the fall changing of the leaves, raking, burning, etc. The only thing I wish it had was the Lake of the Ozarks within 5 miles, I will sacrifice that and drive a couple of hours to it when I want. I like being able to put on a sweater and wearing it all day without having to change into shorts during the same day when it gets too hot. I like Christmas when it feels like Christmas, with all the decorations and snow falling....this is beautiful.

For Retirement: This is one of the ideal areas. Within 2 hours of either Deas Moines, Iowa or Kansas City, Missouri. Within 3-4 hours from Lake of the Ozarks and Branson, Missouri. Travel a little for your entertainment!!!! Go to yard sales , have a yard sale...go to county fairs.......travel up to the Tulip Festival in Pella, Iowa....relax and enjoy!!!!!! I fully intend to.
