Review of Wichita Falls, Texas

Just... don't
Star Rating - 7/24/2020
I've lived all over the country (relocated for work) and this is without a doubt the worst place I've ever had the misfortune to land. You will meet plenty of people who love it, but that's because they're from here and have never left to see that there are other options. It's hot as hell most of the year and everything is brown and scorched and then it's freezing and everything is dead from cold. You've got about 2 weeks of tolerable weather. The most exciting thing to do is to leave - go to Dallas or Oklahoma City, which are both 2 hours away. Now about food. I learned to cook here because you have to unless you want Tex-Mex, BBQ or burgers. If you want something more exotic, you're out of luck. There is NO diversity here - of people, of food, of music (it's all redneck country crap), of anything. Give up hope all ye who enter here.

I lived in Europe for 8 years, traveled all over the world, go back to Europe every year, lived in Austin and San Antonio, but I choose Wichita Falls. WF is not and never will be a "big city" with a so-called "variety" (where variety really means more of the same crap with different names), but it does have some nice quality. It will not have the charm of a small European town, or the amazing mountain backdrops of the northwest. But it does offer friendly people, a very low cost of living, and for those individuals that can appreciate a location for what it is, a beauty unlike no other. Drive down 287 on a spring evening and enjoy an amazing sunset with colors that amaze. Drive 15 minutes out of town and get out of your car on a clear summers eve and stare at the sky. An amazing view of a sky full of stars that trumps any light polluted. Maybe go sit in your car with your friends and enjoy a beer at P2. Go down town and meet some of the owners of our pretty cool establishments: Iron Horse Pub, Gypsy Kit, and many many more in just a couple of square blocks! Hit up the small towns that surround WF and enjoy festivals, great food, and friendly Texans. I came to WF hearing the same close minded complaints from my military buddies: WF is the armpit of Texas ... idiots. Those are the same type of people that would travel across the country and eat at some crappy national restaurant because they don't have enough sense to find that hole in the wall restaurant run my some family that knows more about cooking than any chain restaurant. A lot of diverse people choose to live here. It's not just locals that never leave. This isn't New York city or San Francisco. No we don't have as many food trucks as Austin (sadly). But there is plenty here for those that want to find it. And the most amazing thing is if you're not sure, ask someone. Odds are they will give you the same Texas charm and friendliness that I have come to find synonymous with Wichita Falls.
