I spent a few days in Hesperia and it didn't seem like a waste land to me. What did strike me was the odor. I've heard it best described as a beach like odor but I would add a burnt beach odor. This is basically smog blown over from LA. I decided to gather up some of the soil in a water bootle to demonstrate the odor to my family. I could not detect an odor in the soil while in Hesperia which makes sense. Once home in NJ I took a deep breath from the open bootle... HOLY COW one of the most acrid odors I've ever encountered. This is what people are breathing into their lungs and San Bernardino is even worse. The same odor was missing from Lake Elsinore.
