Review of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania

Mundane in Mechanicsburg
Star Rating - 9/29/2013
Greetings everyone,

I grew up in Allentown PA and moved to Mechanicsburg in 2000 when attempting to reconcile with my ex-wife. My son had just started kindergarten and I found a good job so I stayed in the area. So for the last 13 years I've been a single dad content with being in a dull area for the sake of my son. But now that he's about to graduate, we're excited to finally leave.

As always, it depends on what age and lifestyle people are accustomed to when choosing to relocate to a specific area. In Mechanicsburg you have a stable and growing economy especially with the state capital nearby as well as being close to many large cities. You have your fair share of malls and chain restaurants, but nothing exceptional. Plenty of parks and libraries as well. The schools are good and the crime rate is low, so it's a nice place to raise a family - safe, albeit boring.

Unfortunately there isn't much in the way of culture or nightlife unless you want to travel to Baltimore or Philly. You could go into nearby Harrisburg, but with the city filing for bankruptcy in 2011, don't expect much. You can hit the bars along 2nd street, catch a minor league baseball game or visit the Civil War museum, but not much else. My fondest memories are taking my son to the IMAX and science center downtown or playing mini golf on City Island and watching the fireworks on the 4th of July along the river - but now that he's older, we typically leave the area for fun.

So overall Mechanicsburg isn't all that bad for a sleepy little town, but we've outgrown it and are looking to relocate in Florida. I've been to Miami, Orlando and the Tampa St. Pete area but still need to visit the east coast in December before we make our move. Thanks for reading my review, hope it helped...

I'm sorry, but as a Mechanicsburg resident, I'm not going to let this contentious review go unchallenged. His review should have been titled "Arrogant from Allentown". His small town bigotry is obvious in his language dripping with sarcasm, using terms and phrases such as "mundane", "dull area", "excited to finally leave", and "boring" - all very insulting. He says there isn't much in the way of culture...and in his list of a few things to do in the Mechanicsburg-Harrisburg area, completely fails to mention the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, Market Street chamber concerts, live band music at the Midtown Scholar Bookstore, many major events at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex, racing at the Williams Grove Speedway, and many other cultural venues in the area. Not bother to look around much in your 13 years here? Calling Mechanicsburg a "sleepy little town" smacks of derision, as if its citizens do not keep themselves active and productive. Of course that must be impossible, with the big-city concept that in order to have a fun and happy life, you have to have plenty of nightclubs and bars to frequent. As with his phrase, "we've outgrown (Mechanicsburg)", which implies that to live happily in a small town environment, one must be immature and not fully developed. Hmm, the wild nightlife goes so far to advance maturity and cultural development. Really. Yeah, if you're a night-clubbing, bar-hopping party person, then Mechanicsburg probably isn't for you. If that's what you want, why would you expect that from a small town anyway? Come to Mechanicsburg to enjoy a different kind of pace - not slower, not sleepier - but it's own kind of culture and plenty of it.
