Review of Penbrook, Pennsylvania

VERY Small Town
Star Rating - 11/1/2009
When we moved to the Borough of Penbrook, we had no idea of what we were getting ourselves into. Situated directly across the street from Harrisburg proper, it is a tiny 0.5-mile piece of land that takes itself very seriously. The Borough is divided into 4 wards, and has its own police department, fire department (volunteer), and mayor/council. There are pros and cons to living in Penbrook. The pros are that there is a lot of police protection, and they are very available. It is also easy to take care of things in the office since there are less than 3,000 residents, and all Penbrook residents vote at the Community Building which houses the police station. The cons are that there is a lot of added bureaucracy including extra taxes, extra inspctions, extra permits, and extra stay-on-your-toes moments. Police officers have been known to stake out stop signs for violators, and the Borough has a paid position of "Code Inspector." The main thing this person seems to do in the summer is drive around in a truck and issues warnings/tickets (somewhat randomly) for vilations such as not mowing the grass often enough, taking the trash to the curb too early, parking too far from the curb, etc. If you ever do move to Penbrook, though, a must-stop visit would be to Zimmerman's candy store, located about a block from the "town center." It is a 4-generation family-owned candy store that specializes in homemade peanutbutter and carries about every kind of candy/chocolate/baking item ever made. Delicious! :)
