Review of Burien, Washington

Small town with leading edge planners
Star Rating - 11/3/2009
I have lived in Burien since 1972. It is currently going through a Renaissance. Having become incorporated in the early '90s, its city council has fresh and forward thinking ideas about urban planning and eco-living. The town center has been reborn with small mom-n-pop restaurants and boutiques, with condo living above retail. All this in spite of the economic downturn, which makes filling these retail/home spaces difficult. Nonetheless, it is eight miles from downtown Seattle, making it the cheapest housing of any other community so close to the downtown Seattle core. Its crown jewel is a 140-acre Seahurst park in which the entire community can enjoy Puget Sound waterfront, picnics, hiking and a sense of "getting away from the city," just blocks from Burien's downtown core.
