Review of Lodi, California

COSTLY, BUT WORTH IT
Star Rating - 2/7/2014
Unlike many California Central Valley small towns, Lodi is clean, relatively crime-free, and pleasant. Its downtown has an almost European feel for it and neighborhoods, even the less affluent, are well-preserved. Traffic is minimal and the climate, thanks to gentle off shore breezes drifting in from the Pacific, is much milder and comfortable than, say, that of Modesto, farther down the highways.

Downsides are largely economic. Jobs are few and far between and are low-paid. Coupled with that consideration, the cost of living is around 110% of the national average. My wife and I love Lodi, but, alas, we will be forced to relocate to a much less desirable are of the valley, probably south of Modesto. We will dearly miss Lodi, but we cannot afford to live here in retirement....

That was mostly true in 2014, but Lodi has changed alot since I moved here in 2010 - crime has gone up although there has been improvement in the past year and the police dept is adding more law enforcement officers so that should help. The growth has been drastic in the past few years and housing developments have been and are sprouting up on the south, southwest and west of Lodi. I love small towns, that was what appealed to me, but small is rapidly declining. I am leaving the state actually where I was born and raised - makes me sad- but the cost of living is 52% higher than the national average and housing has skyrocketed reminding me of the early 2000's just before the bottom fell out of the real estate market. I will miss miss Lodi's beautiful restored downtown with its lovely boutiques, restaurants and trees making School St. a lovely place to stroll. Very unique. The cost of living is driving me out of this once beautiful, easy living state to one that is much more affordable with a slower pace for more relaxed living. For those who complain about narrow-minded Christians telling them they are 'going to hell' - I'm sorry you met up with those kinds of christians. They certainly don't sound like the Christians I associate with. Jesus loves all of His kids, doesn't sound like the love was there. Hopefully, you will meet Christians who aren't so judgemental and can express God's love.
