Review of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas

I should Never Have Moved Here!
Star Rating - 11/19/2019
The Village is governed by a corporation NOT a normal Mayor etc form of government. Manager(CEO) Leslie Nalley and her lackeys (Board of Directors) are destroying this once fine retirement area. She and the board members have apparently decided that they will fundamentally transform (destroy) our way of life. Lesslie Nalley is now one of the Highest Paid Mayors in the state even though the Population of Hot Springs Village is barely 14,000 people. She has a Salary that is HIGHER than the Governor of Arkansas. Her and the Board has passed legislation making it impossible for her to be fired requiring a quorum of 6 of 7 board members for termination. The BOD has doubled or POA (HOA) premiums in the last couple of years and with the type of deficit spending we are facing potential bankruptcy or HUGE increases in POA expenses. They passed the increases after being rejected several times by implementing a new Two Tiered system for dues. Leslie Nalley has fired board members who had a dissenting vote from her securing her No Fire Position.
We moved from Florida to HSV for the trees and lakes. H.S.V is in the middle of no where. We are 45 min from Hot Springs and 45 min from Benton and 60 min from Little Rock! NO JOBS HERE! CEO/Mayor Leslie Nalley has spent 500,000 dollars on a new master plan that's aimed at 30 years in the future! Oh Come On! What a Joke! And she purports that we need more money for infrastructure after spending $500,000 on some Bogus Plan! We have been here 6 years and have watched this place be destroyed by Bad Management!
Had we have wanted this, we would have moved to Branson, Mo.
Now we can't move were trapped. Property values have dropped the only people selling are taking huge hit's to Get The Hell Out Of Here!
And Yes, we have our share of crime as well.
I could go on and on but let it suffice to say.....
Want a trouble free area to retire-DON'T COME TO HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE Ar.

Hot Springs Village, Arkansas has lots of amenities Golf, Tennis and all other extras you can find. Problem is HOA member prices and dues are never the same. The prices you see are a guideline. You may pay more one day for various things and then a couple months later it's a different price. Gate cards, the price also varies. I don't mind paying for those things if it helps improve the area. Lawn bag tags are .25 one day and then next day they are .50 cents a piece it's the regular garbage truck that comes to collect it and they rip through the bag and dump leaves in the truck. The sticker for your car, same thing. So the prices you see are just a guideline and it will vary depending in who is in the HOA, what they judge you as when you come in there. I don't know where all the money is going, but it isn't being used like it's supposed to be used. The no guard gates had installed a kiosk of sorts, but it never worked. Some of the people that live here are nice, but it depends on what area you live in. There is a small big box store, but good luck shopping there. People from surrounding area flock in droves thinking it's better than the one where they live. The drinking water has problems although they send you a yearly report of thier testing. Take a drive out and look at it, it's beautifully turquoise for some odd reason. It kills any plants I water with it so it makes me a little leary to drink it, when I do it's dehydrating. All in all it's beautiful true, there's things to do true. But good luck if you have grandkids that come over and they want to play there's nothing for grandkids here but a small play ground and a beach. Crime...well if you want to know just look at the published police reports, that's just what is published. I haven't had problems with much crime here. You are a target for scammers and people who come work and on things here. You pay a higher price for the same service that would be done right outside the gate. Permits are another thing that's never the same price when you call about it and ask they tell you one price. You get there and it's more. It really depends on who you know at the HOA! It's a good place to retire if you have lots of money and you dont care what you spend it on or the varying amounts. The dues are never the same from one month to the next.

Old news. Those of us who wanted change voted in board members who followed the resident's lead, not the "manager" who is now gone. Joseph is one of those people who like to complain, but never offers to work to make things better. Villagers are encouraged to be a part of what is going on, and if you don't like something, then get involved to help fix it. There are families from all 50 states and 16 foreign countries, and our population continues to grow... so of course, you are always going to get complainers.

We too moved to HSV from Florida. We too love the lakes, mountains, golf courses, resort atmosphere, and the friendly people. If The POAs plan fills HSV with more active retirees, it will benefit us all. Already my sister decided not to move to HSV because of negative, alarmist press like yours, Joseph. The community requires proficient management, which we have: good roads, manicured golf courses, a new resort pool, tons of tennis, pickle ball, cards, churches, and medical.

I didn't vote on Joseph's statement because I totally agree with the majority of his comments EXCEPT that property values have NOT dropped drastically and the crime rate is still very low, with little or NO major crime in recent years. The Villagers have now awakened to the truth of his comments about how the Village has been managed in the past several years and has now elected a Board of Directors that has rapidly moved to take back the control and power which was abdicated to Twiggs and his hand-picked successor, Nalley. The Village is now well on it's way to being returned to the paradise it was designed to be and physically still remains. It is full of natural beauty, amenities and organizations to appeal to whatever your interests may be, and wonderful, caring people. Now that it is back on the right track, I HIGHLY recommend HSV as a wonderful place to live!

This is an update on my November posting. We as a Village voted in a new BOD, got rid if the CMP (comprehensive Master Plan) changed the 130+ pages of covenants back to the original guide lines and fired the CEO Nalley. That's The Good News! The Bad new's is we still have a BOD that's fighting with each other, They recently fired the Board Chair (the lady who got rid of the CMP and Covenants). And we still have water we can't drink, and a septic system that stinks (pumping stations). We also have 9 Golf Courses that are running $2,000,000+ million in the hole requiring a proportionate subsidy from We The People. Subsidized Village Restaurants that are running at a $500,000 yr loss. And with out the 4,000,000 grant/loan we received for Covid 19 and at the end of this year we would be insolvent! This Story Is Not Over!
