Review of Roano,

Not a good place to work and live
Star Rating - 12/17/2015
Worked in my field in NYC for 15 years, have a Bachelor's degree and I cannot even get an interview for part-time low-level jobs in my field in Roanoke. I have applied time and again. Why even apply to for a county or city job when there is a wall of prejudice and nepotism no doubt(and a lack of transparency to cover it up)? The head of the county's Human Resources Dept. told me point blank that I should volunteer when I made an oath that I would make enough money to pay for my subsidized healthcare plan, plus I need to work to survive! The pay is low too if you can find a job and the benefits are none or pathetic, though this can't be exclusive to Roanoke. There is nothing to do in this small town, esp. if you are used to living in an exceptional, larger city. Old houses with character with sizeable yards are lacking too. The climate isn't great, lots of mold, the clay soil makes gardening very difficult and frustrating, and it is so far from the ocean (the man-made Smith Mtn. Lake is awful!). Unless you want to work in a supermarket, why come here to be stranded and isolated in the middle of nowhere, going stir crazy? The only thing of value here is the beautiful local wildlife, which natives sometimes shoot.

I live in monticello ny in Sullivan county thats an isolated hell hole were there really is no work if you dont have any kind of technical or vocational skills the biggest employer in Sullivan is the county and thats literally a who's who employer if they dont know they aint gonna hire ya and you really cannot compare NYC to roanoke youre talk in about the biggest MSA in the whole country to the 164th msa in the country thats like trying to compare apples to like lettuce or something nonfruit like lol and the cost of living in NYC is outrageous $15 dollar minimum wage a studio apartment in NYC is $1000 a mo. A pack of Cigarettes is 15 and change in NYC so....Nd here minimum wage in Sullivan county 2 hrs north of NYC is 11 an hour and a pack of Newport are 10.50-11 a pack a studio apartment is 650 a month for a decent apartment that isnt ran by Gabriel Bentonazzi a Tuscan Italian immigrant who is the head of the Sullivan county landlords Association a group of slumlords that run all the apartment houses that arent being maintained by the Monticello housing authority..... All I'm saying is you really can't compare the two and move out to a rural area like Sullivan county and I bet you'll be changing your tune
