Review of Hyattsville, Maryland

My City
Star Rating - 3/25/2019
I grew up in West Hyattsville. The area has come a long way! We are so centrally located, only a mile or so from D.C. and the area is very diverse. People say it's up and coming, but I think it already came! Home prices are skyrocketing. The arts district in Hyattsville is really the part of town that's happening. However, I've seen a major difference on East-West Hwy. Beautiful townhomes are being built, new store, restaurants etc. This has been a best-kept secret for far too long. Where else can you buy a house so close to the District that's in walking distance to organic markets, breweries etc? Here you can for under 500k (And that's the much nicer homes) There are still some single family homes for under 300K but not for long. The area has a heavy Spanish population, lots of gay people, and families of every kind. That's what made me fall in love with it. Although I'm leaving Hyattsville because I think MD taxes are crazy, and I'm over it. It's getting to be west coast expensive, so I'll go out there and not shovel. But I love it here so much!!! I highly recommend it. And for those that think "Really?!? I'll get my Louis stolen or totes shanked or something". It's really a safe area!!! I've never had a problem. Just be aware of your surroundings like any other place. I mean, we have a Whole Foods a miles away. That's all really any of us need to know ;)

Yes, I've lived in Hyattsville for 36 years. Getting ready to sell - only because I've retired recently and Maryland is NOT tax-friendly to Retirees. The City has been taking care of itself, but recently declared itself a Sanctuary City. If that bothers you, make note of it. Hyattsville City Police respond quickly on the off-chance you have any issues. I am not aware of there being a lot of gay people here because I never think to ask. I don't much care, really. The Arts District has a lot of new restaurants. The micro-brewery has been a big hit and was an actual hardware store of the same name (Franklin's) when I moved here in 1984. This is a Tree City USA location, and there are several City restrictions on the removal of trees, yard upkeep, etc. That can be a good thing! But also frustrating since you must clean your walkways of snow within 24 hours, cannot park a vehicle on an unimproved area of your lawn, etc. This is one of those Old Home Towns where trains go by at 4am, there's a City Parade on July 4th (and fireworks), and City Living with bike trails, local parks, plenty of shopping and restaurants. The City has changed a lot since 1984 - a lot more younger people than I recall.
