Review of Marco Island, Florida

Outsiders not welcomed at Marco Island
Star Rating - 7/3/2016
I have been coming to Marco Island for the past couple of years to spend the 4th of July with my family in this beautiful city, but never again. From what we learned there is a big push by the locals to block families that live out of town from legally renting another homeowner's house to spend time vacationing. In less then 30 hours the cops were called to the house three times. Two times because of parking related issues which there are similar situations in other homes in the neiborhood and one call was made on the "assumption" that my family was going to set off fireworks. Yes an assumption! The call was made at 8am on July 2nd. The policemen were very nice and courteous and admitted they hated making these types of visits but they were just doing their job. We were advised that if they were called again they would be forced to issue citations. We also noticed some of the neighbors spying and looking into the home as if we were trouble. It is clear to us that Hispanic and Black families are not welcomed by the mostly white 60+ aged local residents. Hard working families that can obviously afford spending time in one of the costliest cities in FL. I also feel bad for the homeowners that rent their nice homes because of the revenue loss they will suffer from people being harassed and chased out of the city. I will make sure I spend by hard earned money somewhere else next year. Marco Island residents should be ashamed and embarrased of this behavior. The most ironic part of this whole issue is that we, the FL residents, are being chased out of a neighborhood in which most of them are out of towners themselves. The house we rented is actually owned by New Yorker not living in FL.

Obviously it’s squared at you. Don’t know you personally but many friends and family on Marco Island. It’s pretty basic to surmise that you don’t mix well with the kind, neighborly and hospitable. folks of Marco Islsnd-Naples FL. Well unfortunately If you do return you will learn to be a better neighbor, learn to park, keep the obnoxious noise down and stop complaining. BTW I have a second home in Atherton, CA. and I can personally attest that my tenants that lease my condos out on Marco Island. (both leased by the year) don’t have your issues. Marco Island is relatively verily reasonable. I don’t even complain about costs where I reside. No one likes RifRaff...

This is the deal Ernie. Many thousands of snowbirds visit Marco island, including spring breakers. In the many months they are here they don't make nearly the mess that those who cross the state from SE Florida do on the Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day weekends. So, if you and your friends can pick up your mess and tone it down a bit, you will be welcome. If not, PLEASE spend your so called hard earned money somewhere else. PS, Police have better things to do than stop at a house without a reason. There is more to your story than you are willing to say.

You got that right Ernie. Many outsiders are not welcome. They flock here in droves from SE Florida, that includes Homestead, over holiday weekends and trash our beaches. Here is my advice to you. DO NOT stay in a residential neighborhood. Stay in one of the condo rentals at the beach. The people who make their homes here do not appreciate people screaming at all hours in a language most can't understand. Get my drift? Also tell those same screaming people at the beach to pick up their crap and not leave it for the residents to clean up after them. I suspect you don't have a clue what I am talking about. So yes, I agree..............take your hard earned money and vacation where you are more familar with the rules and especially the culture. Where you are coming from is a mess. You know that. That's why you come to Marco. We don't want that mess transported here.

Ernie, I have rented many homes on Marco Island. At no time did the police ever visit me for any reason. A year and a half ago my wife and moved into a new home we had built. Three neighbors on our street rent their homes. Several renters were african american. At no time did ANYONE in the neighborhood call the police on them. To the contrary we had very nice neighborly conversations with them, the same as we do with white people. No difference. They loved it here on Marco Island and I look forward to seeing them again. All very nice respectful families. Ernie, nobody is calling the cops on you unless you did something to trigger concern. So stop using the race card and making false accusations.
