Review of Hyattsville, Maryland

Resident for 36 Years
Star Rating - 5/1/2020
Yes, I've lived in Hyattsville for 36 years. Getting ready to sell - only because I've retired recently and Maryland is NOT tax-friendly to Retirees. The City has been taking care of itself, but recently declared itself a Sanctuary City. If that bothers you, make note of it. Also, if you are from other regions of the Country - please note that Hyattsville (like nearly all of Maryland) is predominantly Liberal Democrat - definitely NOT Conservative Republican, even though we now have a Republican Governor. Hyattsville City Police respond quickly on the off-chance you have any issues. I am not aware of there being a lot of gay people here because I never think to ask. I don't much care, really. The Arts District has a lot of new restaurants. The micro-brewery has been a big hit and was an actual hardware store of the same name (Franklin's) when I moved here in 1984. This is a Tree City USA location, and there are several City restrictions on the removal of trees, yard upkeep, etc. That can be a good thing! But also frustrating since you must clean your walkways of snow within 24 hours, cannot park a vehicle on an unimproved area of your lawn, etc. This is one of those Old Home Towns where trains go by at 4am, there's a City Parade on July 4th (and fireworks), and City Living with bike trails, local parks, plenty of shopping and restaurants. The City has changed a lot since 1984 - a lot more younger people than I recall.
